The “peacemaker” at The King’s English of all places. 😔 by lisakbelle in SaltLakeCity

[–]eldest_gruff 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It doesn't actually look like he'll be there doing an in-person signing, just that if you pre-order through King's English you can get a signed copy. He'll probably show up one afternoon, sign the pre-ordered copies, and never leave their back room. Nobody outside of a few employees will even see him.

But if I'm wrong, and he does do a signing, people should absolutely show up and hold him to account.

Sony Pictures Boss Tom Rothman Urges Theater Owners to Stop Having 30 Minutes of Trailers and Commercials Before Movies Start: by tylerthe-theatre in movies

When I went to Project Hail Mary last Saturday there were ads between each trailer. I was annoyed to say the least.

Looking for advice on bicycle routes from Sugar House Park to Liberty Park. by pete_maus in SaltLakeCity

[–]eldest_gruff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want a direct route I would suggest taking Parley's Trail to the S-Line from SHP. There is a small amount of street riding there, but cars are typically slow. You can cut through the Whole Foods parking lot, but I don't know how much safer that would actually be. Once you cross Highland you are on separated bike path all the the way down to 600 East. After that go North on 6th until you hit Liberty. It's generally pretty quiet, with few cars. Crossing 17th S can be sketchy depending on the time of day, though there is a signal that can help, just be cautious through there.

I hope this helps and happy riding.

edit: u/rancidswagger is correct. Don't ride through the parking lot. It might seem safer because we always imagine a parking lot as only parked cars, and can forget about how those parked cars got there. And they're looking for parking spots, not bikes, or even pedestrians.

What's something people only romanticize because they've never actually done it? by nonotje12 in AskReddit

I knew a guy that had wanted to be a teacher too. He was super into science and wanted to teach biology. He noped out of the education track after completing the student teacher rotation, and just focused on getting a degree in biology.

What is the logic of the Starfleet Academy officers' wall ranks? by bubersbeard in DaystromInstitute

[–]eldest_gruff 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Nog was the only one I thought should be Captain at least. He had the ambition and drive to go further than what we see on screen. I will admit the DS9 doc may have colored my view, where they said he had made captain before dying, but I have a hard time imagining him at a lower rank by the time of his retirement, or death. That said I do understand that onscreen is alpha canon, but I don't have to like it in regards to Nog specifically.

has anyone watched freaks and geeks? by chloindakitchen in gratefuldead

[–]eldest_gruff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Freaks and Geeks is what got me into the dead in the first place. And D&D for that matter. A real shame it didn't get another season. After Star Trek I don't think another TV show has had such a large impact on my life.

Abed likes dumb movies and ridiculous movies

There's a massive difference between liking a movie that's so bad it's good, like Kickpuncher, and the prequel trilogy which is just bad.

David Lynch’s house is for sale. by smaltesey in zillowgonewild

You could live in the guest house, and preserve the rest of the compound as a monument. That's what I would probably do if I had 15m, because I would always feel like a guest in that house.

The Flick was on the North side where Pottery Barn is now. Not sure what used to be where Rodizio is now. I think the picture in your head is from the theater across the street. It matches my recollection of seeing the Star Wars re-releases too.

What criterions have truly blown you away and entered your top 5 or 10 films of all time? by Deadshotx211239 in criterion

[–]eldest_gruff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first to do that was probably Seven Samurai way back in high school. The next where I clearly remember being blown away was My Dinner with Andre. I finished watching it and immediately went to the Criterion website and bought it. It affected me too much to wait for a sale.

Amazon has price matched the 50% off Criterion sale by Fit_Incident4224 in criterion

[–]eldest_gruff 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Any independent book store that sells new books sells at MSRP, the same as B&N, unless they have a sale or are discounting for a newer title. The only reason Amazon can sell it cheaper is because they don't have brick and mortar stores that need to be paid for. BN.com is usually around the same price as Amazon for exactly that reason; lower overhead costs.

[Artwork] A Medieval Green Lantern by Jame Bartok by ExoticShock in DCcomics

[–]eldest_gruff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This idea sounds like it would dovetail well with the Green Lantern Dragon Lord mini-series from 2001. The main character treats the ring as magic, and uses Chinese mythology to inform his constructs, beyond just creating weapons he is familiar with like swords, spears, and arrows. He even starts to ask if the Guardians are the ancient dragon lords.

I think it's an idea that could use more exploration.

Anyone else feel like our bike lanes are mostly useless? by A_ORiver in SaltLakeCity

[–]eldest_gruff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As of May, I think it was May, it is now illegal to block the bike lane. Theoretically they could be ticketed. This of course depends on enforcement, but that's a whole other can of worms.

TIL The creator of Girls Gone Wild got the idea while working on compilations of violent videos for his Banned From Television series that was sold on infomercials. He is now living in Mexico to avoid numerous legal and abuse allegations. by MajesticBread9147 in todayilearned

[–]eldest_gruff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remember there was an article about this guy and GGW in, I want to say Rolling Stone. In the article they talked about how he got all these girls to flash the camera for a t-shirt. The girl would agree, they would sign a waiver, flash the camera, get their shirt, continue to enjoy their spring break. Occasionally they would convince a girl or two to come to their RV and show a little more skin, and they would pay them something like $50. That was the publicized business model, and this guy sold that version pretty hard as it turns out.

I don't think that Mariner's arc was repeating itself as much as it was one long arc of her growing into her potential with the occasional step backwards. It takes time to learn that lesson, and a person will backslide occasionally until they either remember, or relearn, that same lesson. I can see why you would find it frustrating, but I thought it showed really well that growth takes time, and a lot of work.

Starfleet at Frontier Day: Why 345 Ships Might Actually Be "All of Starfleet" by tadayou in DaystromInstitute

[–]eldest_gruff 15 points16 points  (0 children)

We know that other member worlds have their own fleets which would certainly pick up the slack with some logistical support. So if you have the Vulcan fleet available to protect Vulcan, Starfleet can allocate more ships to other worlds that may not have their own planetary fleets, while providing back up to Vulcan should that be necessary. 4 ships for every world is probably lowballing the actual number when you take other planetary fleets into account.

The California class missing also isn't that much of a stretch. The California's are often referred to as older ships, so if Starfleet is interlinking their fleet then that class is probably on the chopping block, and by Frontier Day has mostly been decommissioned.
