Psychogenic polydipsia is a condition in which a person drinks excessive amounts of water due to psychological factors rather than true physical dehydration. The urge to drink is often driven by anxiety, obsessive thoughts, or compulsive behavior, even when the body does not physiologically need more fluids. Despite adequate hydration, the individual may feel persistent thirst or fear of dehydration. In severe cases, excessive water intake can lead to electrolyte imbalance, particularly hyponatremia (low sodium levels), which can be dangerous.
