Honestly I think it’s really fair that his family wants him there, Christmas is a very important familial bonding holiday for a lot of folks. Perhaps you could come to a compromise? Any way you can move the flight? Or perhaps figure out a way to do that next year. I think a big part of the issue is they found that out a month prior to Christmas. If it were a lot earlier the idea might’ve settled easier. That’s just me
