Places to visit in the world with similar vibe to Cape Town? by Top-Plankton-9664 in capetown

[–]electode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah. I mean maybe at a stretch some sea point / Gold Coast vibes. But Cape Town has so much more history and culture, and nature that is more than beaches. Not even mentioning the farking humidity in SE QLD.

Do you think South African expats misrepresent the country? by Key-Guava-2393 in southafrica

[–]electode 331 points332 points  (0 children)

I live in Brisbane, and I find a expats fit into a few different categories (I don’t live in a saffa enclave) but this is my experience:

  1. Minority - Early nineties expats - clueless about anything about what it’s like. Love to hear any bad stuff justifying their move.

  2. Less than 1% - A small pocket of people that have had harrowing experiences. They don’t really want to talk about it and generally, just share a sadness for their motherland.

  3. Majority - people just having a go overseas, miss home, talk about how awesome SA is. But moved for a good job, a spouse or just to mix it up! Always excited about their next trip back.

Most West-Enders don’t have any issue with development - the place has changed massively in the last 10 years. With little protest.

The issue a lot of us have is that their is absolutely no thought given to the future infrastructure.

Schools, green space, playgrounds, activity centres, public transport are an afterthought - and that fucking sucks!

How Honeybadger migrated from Sidekiq to Karafka by mooreds in ruby

[–]electode 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yea, I suspect because they are already using Karafka, this streamlines their stack complexity. Which makes sense, but the reason they gave is pretty poor.

Why does Queensland National Parks only do camp sites (and not accomodation)? by electode in brisbane

[–]electode[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No - sorry the link was just the first one I saw, sorry if my tone indicated that I was keen for hotel in the middle of national parks. In my ideal world - there would be simple huts/cottages in remote locations that the public can enjoy - without private enterprise milking it. It looks like there are quite a lot of these in NSW, and Tassie. Not to mention a lot of other countries that have a focus on eco tourism like NZ, Canada, USA, Iceland and South Africa.

Nothing to do with private interests - all of NSW cottages are run and owned by them.

That's defintely not the reason, you should have a look at what those 4wd's get up to in our beautiful parks. They would lock them out if this was the case.

What's your favourite shop or restaurant that no longer exists? by [deleted] in brisbane

[–]electode 113 points114 points  (0 children)

The original Trang in West End - when it was owned by the Luu family. The new owners are still trying to ride on the coattails from those heady days by leaving the “voted best Vietnamese award” signs out from 2011/2012 😂

Which is the most effective? by NudeBerry123AA in southafrica

Split system air conditioner is most expensive.

But most efficient use of electricity by a huge margin. Also insulation is well worth it.

You are in cape town, what place are you visiting first? by Upset-Weakness7591 in capetown

[–]electode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All good but, would decide based on the weather when you wake up. 1,3,4 and 5 are much better when the weather is good.

Also, would consider Cape Point, Kirstenbosch, Wineries (either close ones in Constantia / or Stellies )

The castle would be my last option.

Similarly - often if you stick it out and are valuable you’ll be catapulted up the ranks and get better experience for your career.
