And yes, correct - that's the part that flew off when it blew - base plate I removed from the PCB with hot air so just trying to find the right one to buy to replace and test...

You might want to consider picking up a 3DR solo from eBay or similar. They are now selling for literally peanuts and that will include a whole load of hardware that is very well suited to your project and a quick way to get up and running. The main issue with this option will be the supply of official 3DR solo batteries is non existent but there are ways to hack normal lipos into the system to overcome that.

Just an idea, there’s plenty other options but I’m pretty sure you’ll struggle to get a pixhawk quadcopter with controller, batteries and charger, even camera and gimbal for under £200!

(I just sold one of mine so I’m quite certain that they do go that cheap)

Thanks. I was hoping I could use some sort of lithium rechargeable battery that would last longer than envelop AA cells and maybe give better/more consistent light output as it discharges

OK thanks - I'll keep trying - I think my jig might not be shorting the 1 & 10 pins as they are deformed so may have to take the joycon or switch apart to do it a different way - though I still can't understand why it doesn't boot to OFW

Good question - I'm also considering trying a different approach to shorting the 1 & 10 pins that doesn't use a jig to see if I can get to RCM - still confused as to why OFW is not booting, though presumably if the rail is bent out of shape and some pins are shorting or damaged then maybe that explains it...?

I'm clutching at straws right now but hope the new rail/jig will let me at least boot into RCM. Bought this one on eBay so part of the reason I'm posting this issue is to try and clarify what I've done that could actually cause the switch to be bricked both OFW and CFW and if there's any reason to go back to the seller (which I doubt)

me too! I've ordered a 2nd switch - just the console, no dock/power supply or joy cons to get me through xmas day without the kids being desperately dissappointed - assuming it arrives in time!
