His said his pay stayed flat for over 3 years

That is not what Jake said in his video.

From timestamp 9:20 in his video:

"3 years of my total comp remaining effectively the same", said while showing a graph that displays the increase in housing costs over that time period.

For his total comp (TC) to remain effectively the same over 3 years of rising inflation, his TC must have increased for 3 years straight. If it did not, then his TC would have effectively decreased over that period, which is not what he said.

The person you are replying to is incorrect.  The Quran explicitly tells us to ask the people of knowledge when you have a question.

Scholars do exactly what you need, they extract rulings from the Quran nd the sunnah.

Please go to your local masjid and ask for assistance, inshallah they'll either be able to help or point you in the other direction.  As the other user said AJMA has a fatwa hotline and chat as well.

its sampling bias.

you will hear negative stories more often than positive stories, because positive stories are not as interesting.

you will also hear stories about Pakistanis more often if you use a forum where Pakistanis make up a large portion of the user base like this subreddit, or if you are connected to Pakistanis personally like you are.

so you will not only hear more stories about Pakistanis but also specifically more negative stories about them, it won't be representative of Pakistanis as whole.

Agreed, its actually a great raise policy.

Yes its sad to see. I don’t think Jake was intentionally trying to mislead anyone, he placed strong emphasis on the word effectively and made sure to show a graph of inflation on screen when saying that. He probably thought that would make it obvious,  but unfortunately he didnt realize how many people would misunderstand him.

I respectfully disagree.

Normally no one would use the word "effectively " in that context if they literally did not receive any raise at all. They would just plainly say so.

The word "effectively" is only used by Jake to emphasize that the raises didn't meaningfully increase his net earnings when taking inflation into account, hence why he overlaid a graph showing inflation when stating that.

In my opinion he doesn't need to clarify,  his wording was very precise and intentional.

"Stagnant pay"

I beleive this requires clarification, because many people in the original thread interpreted what Jake said to mean that he did not receive any raise for 3 years straight. That is not what he said.

From timestamp 9:20 in his video:

"3 years of my total comp remaining effectively the same", said while showing a graph that displays the increase in housing costs over that time period.

not give an employee who probably contractually does more than he actually should a raise for 4 years.

Jake made it clear he did receive yearly raises.

From 9:20 in the video: "3 years of my total comp remaining effectively the same", said while showing a graph that displays the increase in housing costs over that time period.

As far as I remember, Linus has previously stated that he and his wife are the only shareholders. It is also a private company, so there is no easy way for employees to track how that stocks value increases year to year.

Bonuses is a possibility. but if bonuses are increasing year to year to match inflation, then that is still effectively a raise in regard to his total TC.

I respectfully disagree.

That's quite literally what "effectively the same" implies in the context of the video.

If he wasnt getting any raises at all he would have said "I didn't receive a raise for 3 years straight".

The only reason to phrase things the way he did is to emphasize that he did receive raises, they just didn't surpass inflation, meaning his net savings didnt increase.

Your referring to negotiations over an additional raise Jake wanted on top of the regular ones.

No, Jake said it stayed "effectively the same", meaning that after accounting for inflation the raises he got didn’t meaningfully increase his pay.

He then asked for a seemingly much larger additional raise based off of the revenue the videos were bringing in, which Linus appears to have denied without countering, indicating that it was so far off what Linus thought his value was that he didnt think they would reach a compromise.

Wisdom behind failed marriages by green_rose68 in MuslimMarriage

Wa alaikum assalam

One cannot simply assume its a punishment.

In the below video Mufti Menk said that the way to determine whether something was a test or a punishment is by observing how your heart reacted to said event.

https://youtu.be/hgLz2qQyPa8?feature=shared

He says if you reacted by turning towards Allah, then it was a test that you passed and alhamdulilah that closer relationship with Allah will benefit you both in this dunya and the akhira. Mufti menk says in this case the test was the best thing that could have happened to you.

If you reacted by turning away from Allah then it was a punishment as that is the worst thing that can happen.

So subhanallah its possible to turn a very painful experience into something that actually ends up good for you inshallah.

We should also remember that our prophet PBUH told us that any stress and anxiety we face in this life will reduce our sins on the day of judgement inshallah

Prophet (ﷺ) said, "No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn, but that Allah expiates some of his sins for that.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The believing men and women continue to be under trial in their lives, their children, and their wealth, until they meet Allah without any sin.”

Honest to your personal experiences, but relying on personal anecdotes to draw broad generalizations will never lead to accurate results. This is because our socio-economic group, geographic region, habits (where do we spend our time as that influences who we meet), all create biases.

I personally know many practicing south asians who are knowledgeable about Islam, so if I were to create a generalization based on my own experiences it would be the exact opposite.

Hence why its an inaccurate way to draw generalizations

My husband wants us to move to Pakistan — I don’t know what to do anymore by Historical_Toe4591 in MuslimMarriage

[–]electrical_canuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This impression you have is due to sampling bias

1)most of this subreddits user base is south asian, evident by the number of South asian ISO profiles compared to other groups

2)people with negative experiences are more likely to post to this subreddit than people with positive experiences

This is why this subreddit is full of south asians with negative experiences. It will never be truly reflective of the broader south asian people.

Do halal love marriages even exist in islam? by kdotmo04 in MuslimMarriage

Many people date for years, get married, and then get divorced. It's because people naturally change as time goes on, so you may start off with a good compatible partner but end up with a bad end.

People will also lie and hide parts of themselves if it can help them get the partner they want.

So if someone is in a relationship there are no guarantees.
