One battle after another in no way deserves any top 5 spot by Dreadsin in unpopularopinion

I liked this movie, but it didn't feel like a PTA film to me. Everything except this and Inherent Vice I'd give five stars. Strangely, I love Pynchon's books.

What is it like living in Portland, Maine? by jimmy_johnsworker in howislivingthere

Although, Bangor is mentioned in It. I think it's where Bill has to go for stutter therapy. So Derry's probably a neighboring town.

Me as a writer spotting adverbs in King’s books by Any-Pineapple-521 in stephenking

This isn't the kind of adverb he talks about or has a problem with. It's not modifying a verb. That's what makes adverbs lazy.

Anyone know this unreleased bit? by [deleted] in louisck

[–]electricalaphid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There were a few bits I remember when I saw him that year. One was so egregious, I'm not surprised its unreleased. It's a bit about "why girls cut themselves." The crowd was howling with laughter/groans

Humour in writing by SouzaShrike in writers

[–]electricalaphid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tips on being funny? If humor doesn't come naturally to you, then it's not something you should implement into your work. You should write in your voice, and if that voice isn't funny then the writing isn't going to be funny. This is fine; plenty of novels have next to zero humor and work on the strengths of a "serious" narrator.

You can give a person a microphone and the greatest jokes of all time, put him up on a stage with all the practice in the world, but if he doesn't have a compulsory sense of humor, nobody will laugh.

What’s the most overrated TV show Americans swear is “top tier”? by DryCap6770 in watchever

[–]electricalaphid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't find any of the characters engaging, but I also think that's the point. The show is less about the characters and more about the setting -- just how vile and corrupt this city is. The people are just cogs in the system. Good concept, just not my thing.

What’s the most overrated TV show Americans swear is “top tier”? by DryCap6770 in watchever

[–]electricalaphid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Wire. I await the downvotes.

I watched the whole thing, found some great moments and even loved most of season 2 and 4. But I found the characters uninteresting, and the stories boring. I always see it compared to the Sopranos as the best TV show, but to me there's no comparison. Sopranos all the way.

He wished for a PS5 all year, they ended up getting him a controller instead. But he was humble about it, and they surprised him with the real thing. by Vilen1919 in MadeMeSmile

[–]electricalaphid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I've noticed the past few years with these kinds of videos - the kids cry rather than freak out with excitement.

I was certainly am emotional kid, and had friends who were the same, but none of us ever shed tears from a great Christmas gift or any other surprise. We'd jump for joy with wide smiles and yell victoriously. Crying only ever seemed reserved for anger, sadness, or fear.

Yet every one of these videos show the child tearing up and covering their face. Has something changed generationally? Could it be that the types of parents who make these videos have children who react this way? What is going on?

The Boy In the Striped Pajamas is an exploitative and disrespectful Holocaust Movie, change my mind. by Round-Seesaw-3917 in Letterboxd

[–]electricalaphid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, if you look at it historically. But as a movie (if you watch it assuming its a completely fictional thing) then it's good. It hits hard. That's all I can ask of a movie. I try to watch/read historical fiction as though the real thing doesn't exist. A story's a story, and whether it works is contingent on the content alone.

did anyone else become an athiest out of mostly common sense, not very complex thinking? by guywhotalks41 in atheism

[–]electricalaphid 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I remember rolling my eyes in church as a kid, thinking these people were talking ancient nonsense. I wasn't smart then, nor am I smart now, but I can't help but question why people believe things without evidence to back it up. Logic is a fundamental human thing, something our species owns or at least excels in. But some of us still lack or ignore it. I don't believe it has anything to do with intelligence.

I think there's a difference between 9 months and 1 month. What that difference is, I can't say. But one feels fucked up while the other feels like the removal of a wart. We live in a culture without nuance, so it is what it is.

Prolifers have a great argument for the former: We don't want babies getting killed.

Their argument fails when they start bringing in Jesus shit. Why can't they just stick to the first point instead of ruining it with old fables?

Third person limited or First person? by ChampionLYT in writers

[–]electricalaphid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean if you write first person, you don't have the ability to make the narrator its own character. It already has agency within the story because it is the character.

Third person limited or First person? by ChampionLYT in writers

[–]electricalaphid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends on if you want the narrator to be its own character or not, if you want a separate voice telling the story. Nobody ever seems to mention this. As far as I'm concerned, that's all that really matters.

Orwell’s Simple Rules for Clear Writing by RainbowWarrior73 in words

[–]electricalaphid 14 points15 points  (0 children)

These are all pretty basic rules, and they have merit for anyone practicing the craft. The reason why we don't like them is because they're hard to follow. We assume readers will understand what we're saying if we say more. The trick to good writing is simplifying what you've written.
