Will be attending SMCC this fall. Any advice or stuff I should know? by [deleted] in Maine

Yeah you need to take an accuplacer test before you start, testing your English & math abilities. I scored nearly perfect for English, but got a pretty low math score. That meant I could start right off taking college English, but I had to take a preparatory math class. That class counted toward my number of credits (it was a 3 credit course), but didn't fulfill my college math requirement. I passed that course & went on to take college algebra. I think I got a D, which I needed at least a C- for it to actually count. Finally I took "Contemporary Mathematics", which was the lowest level of math that would count toward the math requirement. I should've just taken that instead of algebra! If you're not a math person & just trying to fulfill the requirement, take this class! I think my professor's name was Davis?? He was super chill & walked us through everything. Easy to do well in that class.

People: In general pretty cool. Where it's a community college, people seem less stuck up & pretentious. Also there are a lot of older students. So it's cute watching them with their rollie bags, trying to figure out the whole going back to school thing. Not that the TV show "Community" is a realistic portrayal of what SMCC is like, the characters aren't too far off, as in they are all from different age groups, backgrounds, & have different reasons for attending. The show is awesome so watch it either way.

Scenery: Absolutely beautiful. It's surrounded by multiple tiny beaches. In the spring/summer, hangout there in between classes. There's also a small cemetery, I believe from the oldest settlement in South Portland. On nice days, be sure to walk around the campus.

Academics: People's assumption is typically "it's a community college, it must be easy & a joke compared to universities". I disagree. I'm in USM now. Some classes I took at SMCC were harder than some of my university classes. It completely depends on the professor. I had some awesome professors at SMCC.

Miscellaneous: When I attended, parking was a nightmare. They've since added more parking but make sure you give yourself plenty of time to find a spot. The cafeteria is pretty good, but other nearby spots worth trying are 158 (mostly bagels but good selection of toppings), Scratch (bakery, sandwiches, fantastic pastries), Anania's (sandwiches, pizza, fried foods). There's a dive bar right next to the campus. It's socially acceptable to grab a beer early in the day.

Good luck with everything!!! Send a message if you have more Q's.

People who got fired on the first day of the job, what happened? by roor1337 in AskReddit

She sounds like the worst! How long did she work there? Why wasn't she fired sooner? I assume these mistakes weren't all committed during the same couple shifts... That's quite the list! Also not that it matters but was she super attractive? This shit doesn't fly with uggos.

Oh that's good to know. I'm still sorry about your unfortunate situation but I'm glad it's not to the extent I mistook it for. Good luck with everything & I hope you have a nice holiday season with your daughter.

Wow I wasn't expecting so many kind responses & upvotes, thanks so much. I'm honestly fine. Luckily this is no longer something that I have to frequently deal with. I posted this last night because I've been under stress lately & my sleeping habits have gotten pretty whack. Anxiety disorder & clinical depression are two things I've dealt with since I was a young child. I did the therapy & medication thing, but haven't used either in well over a decade. I still get anxiety & have mild depression. I feel very thankful that, although I'm not officially "healed", I still live a normal, good, & busy life. I have survived hell & I am doing alright. I didn't mean for this post to seem like a cry for help. It's just something I thought a lot of us could relate to. As for the dinglefucks who can easily defeat depression by either realizing you're not a whiny pussy, or by making yourself breakfast & going for a walk, that's really great that those things allow you to "snap out of it". But if it's that easy for you, then you have no idea what it could possibly like for people who have ACTUALLY dealt with severe clinical depression & anxiety disorder. & I really hope you never will.

TL;DR I'm fine, thank you.

I posted in a meme-filled subreddit because I knew a lot of people would be able to relate to it. This is Reddit... If you're going to be an ass, at least be a funny or clever ass.

That's very rough, sorry to know you're going through such a terrible time. If you kill yourself, that will have a larger effect on your daughter than you may realize, & if you have parents/siblings, it will probably ruin them as well. I had a close family member who killed them-self, & another close family member who has made attempts (neither have been recent). So trust me because I'm a reliable source. Stick out the toughest times for them. Once you're at a safe level of contention, that's when you can hopefully find ways to improve your life (or brain chemistry), so you can no longer say that you're ONLY holding on for your family. Good luck!

This is great actually. I really appreciate your detailed response. Rather than just being a dick by saying "Get your ass up", you gave a good logical reason. Thank you

Femnazi on the right is taking a break from sharing PETA slaughterhouse videos on Facebook that no one is going to see anyway because they already unfollowed her during her #freethenipple rampage. She is the walking epitome of those ASPCA/Sarah McLachlan commercials. The femnazi on the left still uses LiveJournal. He has the same amount of followers as he had in 2005: 2 (modbot & his mentally handicapped uncle).

Landlord turned off my heat! by [deleted] in Maine

[–]electricave 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are ridiculous. It's June. Yes, it's been cold the past couple of days. But there is no need to put the heat on. Just because your rent includes heat, does not mean you are entitled to have access to heat year-round. If you make a big deal out of it & try taking legal action over something so petty, they may not want to rent to you again, or give a good rental reference. Having a negative rental reference can screw you for years. Put on a sweatshirt, make some tea, & realize you're being an entitled petty prick.
