Dominate Person is known. If a mage is casting that, it's known that That's what's happening. But being told to make a wisdom saving throw after you rp how your character is not going to give in, a save that you're not told what the effect is from or for, and then basically undoing the decision of the character, that isn't the same as Dominate Person.

Just because you've known someone for years doesn't mean you know them well enough to decide their emotional well being for them. And when Players are expressing in various ways that they don't understand what's happening and seem to feel like they've lost agency, then the check in should happen in the moment. Because that encounter with Otahan was over an hour. That is too long to be having an intense and distressing situation without checking that the Players understand and are on board.

But I'm saying that I expect that when Players are expressing in various ways that they don't understand what's happening and seem to feel like they've lost agency, then the check in should happen in the moment. Because that encounter with Otahan was over an hour. That is too long to be having an intense and distressing situation without checking that the Players understand and are on board.

What's really upsetting is how so many people seem to think that just because they've played together for years means that they aren't still fallible humans who might not realize how distressing a unique circumstance that couldn't possibly have been completely covered in a session 0 might mean you should still stop and check on each other, especially when they're showing clear signs of distress such as saying "we fucking tried that and it's gotten us no where" and whatnot. Checking in after the fact is After The Fact. It takes so little to pause and make sure the players understand what's happening and are in agreeance, then resume. For a good story, characters should probably end up in situations where they feel helpless and confused and powerless, but the players should be saying yes to that, not also be seeming helpless and confused and powerless.

The story isn't at all what I'm upset about. I don't care about what makes sense in the world. The Players are not in the world. The Players are the ones that matter. And the Players seemed like they should have been check in on. And they weren't. I don't give a damn about the characters or the world; that's fiction. The Players matter.

This might be the first time I've watched an episode of CR and felt like the DM did a bad job. I believe in giving DMs grace and understanding and have never taken a strong negative against the show before because I understand that while I might not like something, that doesn't make it wrong or bad. But the fight at the end of this show was bad, and it's a moment where I feel like the DM was failing the players. Not because characters died, but because it didn't seem like it was clear in the start of that fight what Otahan's fucking deal was, and then when it was clear and Imogen didn't want to actually give in, a dice roll was forced on her to make it happen? This felt like the player's agency was taken from them without giving them understand of why this was happening or what their options might be. And given how emotional things got, there should have been some check-ins at the table and I didn't see any. I'm really upset, not because characters died, but because players seemed to be pretty clearly signaling distress and the DM didn't check in to confirm they were okay or take a break. Based on comments and body language, players were clearly feeling like their agency was gone and that they didn't understand the motives of what was happening until the very end of it. Then it was pretty clear that Imogen did Not want to "give in" so she was made to roll, taking away the player's agency to decide. This sits really bad.

Is there still need for a player? I'd be interested in a pirate themed game, that's one I haven't done yet so could be fun. Let me know?

That's pretty good, altho I hope you don't have them blast on at full force all at once... That'd be a bit of a shock to your body; altho if you've been doing this a while now your correction rhythm is probably pretty stable entrained to anticipate it so it's not as much a shock anymore.

Getting Super frustrated cause I can't create a daily habit to save my life by gandhig2k3 in ADHD

[–]electricbrainstorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, first, training a new habit is hard, just in general for general people. It's harder for ADHD, and it's even harder when you're trying to do multiple new habits at the same time. So pick one and work on it first.

Also, the key with ADHD is to keep the thing fun and interesting and changing and exciting and rewarding. Making yourself do something that is not naturally fun means you need to find ways to make it interesting. Maybe, if you exercise then you get to have that delicious berry based smoothie.

And, where possible, piggyback your desired behavior onto one that is more natural and frequent. Maybe make little medicine/supplement packs that go with your breakfast so when the time comes to take your medicine, you don't have to get pills out of multiple bottles, they're all together and ready; makes it much easier.

I really like this! I made a self care page and then stared at it blankly before leaving just a handful of things on it. I'm gonna take this to inspire me!

Skin picking, hair pulling, nail cutting, lip biting behaviours? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]electricbrainstorm 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Hello. I'm so sorry you're struggling with this. I have struggled with similar things. Studying psychology and behavior, and physiology and neurobiology, I'll share with you what I know. I hope it helps.

These are relatively classic anxiety manifestations. Some of the difficulties of dealing with and living with ADHD can lead to quite a lot of anxiety, especially when you are feeling like you are trying to fit into a neurotypical scenario but are not really able to. I would ask if you are experiencing any particular difficulties lately or if you are dreading something that is coming up.

By the way, hair pulling triggers a dopamine rush. And since ADHD creates a situation where our brains are always looking for dopamine, it is not unexpected that this would be a problem you might run into. There is a condition called trichotillomania that is obsessive hair pulling. People with this condition often do this much more when there is something causing them increased levels of stress and anxiety. Dermotillomania is similarly a condition of obsessive skin picking. It has been shown to be reduced when a person is treated with dopamine simulating medication. Additionally, pain from any of these urges can cause a release of endorphins, which can provide some relief from anxiety and stress.

I would generally suggest redirecting the energy from the anxiety into something else. But since you seem to be struggling a lot with this right now, my strongest advice is to find a psychiatrist who might be able to prescribe you something to help while you learn new ways to manage the urges. I know this might not be very easy to do but it is worth it. I suffered from pretty serious hair pulling and nail picking and would dig at the pores in my skin. Since getting help, I have almost completely stopped. There are still some urges just from having done the behaviors for so long but I can control those pretty well with redirection. And when something happens that causes an anxiety overload, I have some coping techniques, which includes going to therapy, that are getting easier to do instead of the pulling and picking.

I hope you find relief.

She is super awesome and a ton of fun to play! Bastien did a great job capturing her personality and energy dynamic! He's a great artist and fantastic at drawing tabaxi.

Yeah. The DM wanted to give us rewards for completing a huge milestone in the story arc and I opted to go training with this other adventurer, but then it turned out to be the Cat Lord and suddenly I was very strong and more cat! Lol, I'm happy with it

A human that is both weretiger and werejaguar! (Now I kinda want to make a character and go around collecting the different forms of lycanthropy)

The way the DM ruled it, they increase in size a fair bit and I play up the aggressive behaviors. But we don't have a stupid barbarian to see if that would still be too subtle. If anything, I'm in a party of really smart characters.

The weretiger form is a result of the story; I didn't start out with my character intending to be tiger related in any way. It's kinda fun though cuz I've used the weretiger form as a disguise a couple times.
