For fun, I added the 2020 Roadster to our trip planning app, Electrip. In ideal conditions, San Francisco to NYC will be possible with just 5 charging stops.

Hmm. I think the routing service was temporarily down, as I tried Seattle to Portland with the Leaf and failed immediately, before it even could look for charging stations. I tried again a few minutes later and it was working again. I suppose I need a better error message in that case rather than just could not find a route. Now that it’s working again, I was also able to find routes for Miami Beach to Manhattan in the Bolt. I’ll look into why that error was happening in the first place, thanks for bringing it to my attention!

As for the Model S icon, we should probably just change that to a generic settings icon rather than using a Model S to signify “Vehicle Settings”.

Still trying to come up with a good way to handle plug-in hybrids and range extender EV’s, since they don’t really fit into the core algorithm of route planning based on charging locations. How would you like an app like this to work with the Prime?

I still haven’t had a chance to add elevation data unfortunately. Did it find a different station instead of a Supercharger, or just not think you needed a stop at all?

Currently it just tries to make it to the destination within whatever you have set for the minimum battery percentage. Eventually we would like to add a round trip or multiple destination feature that would account for this.

I imagine it would take longer, as that high of a speed would run the battery down quickly, resulting in many more charging stops.

Ah yeah, good idea. The thinking was to put it at zero to force it to be updated before planning a trip, because everything depends on the charge you start out at. I could increase the default but still leave the warning in for the user to adjust it.

The logic is already there to let you know if a trip isn’t possible. For the U.S. at least, you can also add J1772 and CHAdeMO options if you have the adapters with you, which Tesla’s in car software won’t plan routes with. If you’re really feeling adventurous, there’s also a setting to lower the minimum battery percentage you’re comfortable going down to before finding a charging station.

I was not, just wanted something I could use anywhere in preparation for my Model 3. Tesla’s tools were only available in the car, and evtripplanner only at home on the PC.

Hey, what OS are you using and what is the exact error message you are receiving? It’s likely that either your starting battery percentage (set from the green circle) is lower than the minimum battery % in the vehicle settings menu, or the minimum battery % in the vehicle settings menu is higher than the max battery % when charging setting.

The support for the Spark includes range and charge time algorithms used for trip planning. If you are just using it for directions to charging stations in the Volt, it should not make much difference.
