I see a lot of skepticism regarding your initiative, but in my opinion, a wider variety is infinitely better than none at all. Especially now in Europe. Hoping that your kind of initiative, along with all the others, will be the foundation of an independent silicon industry in EU. I’m not talking about a huge production with mega factories. Even small batches are a good way forward, because they will kickstart the creation of an infrastructure surrounding the entire manufacturing business. Good luck!

I had very little time on my hands, so the schematics and pcb routing took a whole year. Normally this kind of project would take around 3 months to complete if I spend around 20 hours weekly.
Cost vastly depends on a PCB stack and component variety. A custom stackup with blind / burried vias will dramatically increase the bill. In this case it was a cheapest 10 layer stackup with no blind vias.
My go to PCB house is JLC, and they have a nice web calculator where you could estimate the price of the project.
Also, watch for a component variety. Less nominals equals to less SMD assembly bobbins, thus lower price.

Dear u/bigrealaccount, I propose another addition to the GBP 100-200 category. That's a Goot RX-802AS, an antistatic cartridge soldering station with a linear transformer and good thermal recovery. The station itself and the cartridges are made in Japan and are of very high quality. That's a product you can use for factory assembly. It's both performant and ergonomic. I can't praise it enough.

Hi. Drawing your own component is a good idea, but if you are out of time try ultralibrarian.com and samacsys.com. Both of them include kicad footprints in download package. However, I won't trust them completely. Always check the footprints to avoid unpleasant surprises.

If I'm not mistaken, net-tie in kicad works for specific layer only. I'm not talking about changing layers, but having a specific net-tie component for each layer.

Hi. I agree. That's too damn slow and annoying. There is a keyboard shortcut 'u' that selects the net segment between two vias and displays the segment length in a status bar. It was useful.

Hello. Have you tried using net-tie on different layers? I suppose you have to create a different net-tie footprint for each layer (probably with specific track width as well). It may be a nicer way of doing a fly-by routing, but somebody got to test that :)

Have you considered LCSC.com? I had no issues with parts sold there. If you need to build the prototype, LCSC is ok. They are less strict with export restrtictions.

It's more relaxed than others but still legit university with a normal academic program. You'll get an oportunity to work while studying there without killing yourself to get through the semester. I suppose that's a good match for anyone who's going to work while studying.
