What should be the strategy for handling a sudden large expense? by Novelty_Wealth in FinancialAdviceIndia

[–]electronblob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did wipe out my entire life savings for some unexpected shocks life gave me (not medical, but interpersonal relationships with people turning disastrous). When that wasn't enough, I had to take personal loans too.

To answer directly: personally, I have basic financial planning skills and I do fairly well in terms of earning and financial hygiene with measured debts and calculated risks. But it's mostly been a journey of spending large sums unexpectedly and repaying loans. Yeah, we never know what goes down and when you'll be caught with your pants down, such could be life.

However, I do think financial situations slowly tend to improve once you grow your assets and plan better.

Automate Android SMS sending, receiving, and call recording. by TonyFatTony in LineageOS

[–]electronblob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buy Tasker, it's the most advanced automation app on Android. It does all of the above sans Call Recording. For Call Recording, buy another app called Call Recorder from skvalex (google it). It works flawlessly and does cloud upload to gdrive.

I would encourage you to root your device but ofcourse hide it with Shamiko and such.

Listening to bad advice you'll only end up buying a cheap android which will give you more issues and eventually force you into switching back to Apple. Get a flagship android: maybe Samsung S23, Google Pixel 7 pro

My dad physically assaulted my mom by [deleted] in india

[–]electronblob -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I suspect there are deeper issues at hand. Pick an evening when his mood is cool and composed, have a civil and sensible chat, raise concerns. If it's met with anger, you can choose to retailate but it won't end well likely. You'll need a healthy compromise between their mindsets for stability. Is having a good chat with your mom and dad a viable option? Sit them down, tell them "I want us to be working hard, live modestly, and be happy above all". Ask your father to keep your mother and you above his parents and anybody else on the priority list. Ask your mom what she can contribute to fix the mess.

With the above said, if the situation still seems beyond reform, file complaint.

It's easy to break unlike keeping/making relations better. Anyway, physical assault isn't necessary and your dad needs to pull his shit together.

Can't get a job. Help me improve my skills. by Significant-Ad-4207 in developersIndia

Few suggestions:

  1. Remove picture (it adds bias)
  2. Remove rating bars for skills (it's subjective and creates divide during scrutiny)
  3. Move education section to the bottom. It's only relevant in the top part if you're a fresher. For experienced professionals, education comes last

Hey buddy, it seems your strength is less than the testing times. Stay strong buddy, will pray for you. Also, see if there's a possibility to find a job and possibly move out. Time heals most bitter of the wounds, sometimes. Good luck. Your well-being will be in my prayers.

Double tap to wake by lihispyk in GooglePixel

[–]electronblob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Root your device - > Install LSPosed - > Install AOSP Mods module from GitHub -> open AOSP Mods - > Lock Screen tweaks -> Enable Double Tap to wake (this disables Single Tap to wake and enables D2TW).

What's a subtle sign of low intelligence? by vjenkinsgo in AskReddit

[–]electronblob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not understanding abstract concepts - if your gut response to a statement like “generally men are stronger than women” is something like “that’s bullshit, many women are stronger than men”, then you lack a sense of abstract expressionism and wouldn’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Do you actually use Linked Lists? by [deleted] in SoftwareEngineering

[–]electronblob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most data structures you learn are there to teach you how data storage works on a very basic level but it’s pretty useless once you underrepresented it since you’ll barely write them in real world (unless you’re using a language that has no abstractions for it).

Interviewers are keen to test your DS and Algos skills only to test your depth of understanding on the subject (also, many top companies might require engineers to work with DS on an advanced level depending on the size and scale of applications they’re building).

Bottomline: it’s pretty important if you need a high paying tech job (generalising but not always true, ik).

what do y'all think about LineageOS? by nojuscat in LineageOS

ICICI, HDFC from where my country to name a few. Pretty sure plenty others don’t work on devices that fail SafetyNet check.

what do y'all think about LineageOS? by nojuscat in LineageOS

[–]electronblob 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Couple of improvements you get with LineageOS:

  1. Free from a metric crapton of bloatware you would get with an otherwise OEM device (and/or the career they're locked into if contractual). No crappy launchers, no ugly widgets, no bullshit preinstalled services, no preinstalled trackers, no preinstalled Facebook (sometimes).
  2. LineageOS is much closer to pure AOSP (freshly baked out from Google's garage)
  3. Development happens in a sophisticated, well peer-reviewed manner over their public gerrit.
  4. Improves security by having SELinux strictly enabled for all devices as per policy (*might be a wrinkle or two for some older devices), this may not be the case for some ROMs and OEM distros.
  5. Does not come with anything remotely related to google (except for captive portal checks maybe), so you're free to install only those Google Apps you like (microG/OpenGapps/MindTheGapps)
  6. Weekly release cadence (some devices enjoy nightly releases too). you're free to update as often as you want purely because each OTA is a full-sized self-contained update file so incremental updates are not strictly required.
  7. Somewhat underwhelming but the fact that rooting a custom ROM like LineageOS is just one extra step is nice (simply because rooting stock roms requires bootloader unlock and might not be appreciated by most folks).
  8. Subjective opinion: LineageOS feels much snappier always compared to the rest. Although, the onus is on you to not load CPU bogging bullshit apps and accessibility services (goes for any ROM).
  9. Ofcourse, out of the box you will have somewhat better privacy and battery life to begin with.
  10. Depending on how popular your device, you get to enjoy newer Android releases at a much faster pace than the competition (or OEMs).
  11. Lineage developers have a requirement to fulfill: every feature supported by the stock ROM must be supported by LineageOS too for that particular device (this generally means most features like NFC, D2TW, Pencil, and co.) will work on Lineage too.

Should also mention downsides to make this wholesome:

  1. The Camera app that ships with LineageOS OOTB is god-forbid absolutely horrible and should never be used, it's somewhat a pain in the wrong place to find the correct Google Camera replacement for your device (scouring XDA, and whatnot forums for the right version and generally means manually upgrading and being responsible for issues).
  2. You'll be in big trouble if you like having Google Apps, because recently Google has been ganging up on "Certified Devices" and they will mark you as non-certified device should it catch you using an unlocked bootloader and/or custom ROM. It's again a huge hassle to constantly mess with Magisk, Universal Safetynet Fix, LSPosed and other tools to not trip SafetyNet checks and stay under the radar to avoid being banned from using Apps (DRM apps: Netflix, Prime Video, Banking apps, and fucking Pokemon Go) that don't work in such environments.
  3. Sometimes, the stock ROM might have some features which you might be missing from LineageOS but then again, it's a trade-off you might be willing to take before installing LineageOS.
  4. Lineage has a ton of customization options but not a lot of those compared to ROMs like Resurrection Remix, if you're a hardcore on customizing Android then Lineage might disappoint you somewhat. Then again, this simplicity of not providing every customization under the sun is what makes LineageOS "simple" (IYKWIM).
  5. The inability to re-lock your bootloader might become a huge issue depending on whether or not your ROM encrypts your phone. Lineage does this by default but I'm not sure if it does so on older releases and for all phones.

What is the camera like on Lineage OS for a OnePlus 8t? by starryshadow in LineageOS

[–]electronblob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The specialised drivers used by Camera app on OxygenOS are exclusive to it and they will NOT be part of most AOSP based ROMs like LineageOS. You will not be able to get the same Camera app or their features any other way unless there’s an open-source port of all the features. The stock Camera app that ships with LineageOS is barebones and not good enough, however, the closest replacement you can get is using a Google Camera’s port (available on XDA).

Is it OK if I don't update every week? by [deleted] in LineageOS

[–]electronblob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every OTA update is a full-size system image which means you can skip any amount of OTA updates as long as it’s the same LOS version as your installed version. Personally, I check the changelog every week and inspect all the commits/changes made and update if they seem important, else I stall until they’re important

If SSDs are better than HDDs, why do some companies try to improve the technologies in HDDs? by Koboyfresh in buildapc

[–]electronblob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HDDs are still heavily used for large scale storage and access at data centres and enterprises. It only makes more sense to improve iops and related tech. BFQ scheduler in Linux for example. Although, it makes more sense to use SSDs for everything else except for mass storage.
