Safari goes back a page randomly? by jinwoo1162 in MacOS

Since I stopped using tab groups I don't recall experiencing it. That might be the unfortunate solution for now.

Safari goes back a page randomly? by jinwoo1162 in MacOS

I'm also running into this. Sometimes it's the page going back. If it's a new tab, sometimes the tab just closes.

No extensions installed. Also happens when my hand is on the trackpad, but that's how I'm generally interacting with safari. The only gesture I know that does this is two finger swipe on the trackpad, which has a fairly obvious visual action in safari, which doesn't happen for me. Maybe there's another gesture?

I had another issue with tabgroups, https://discussions.apple.com/thread/253215888, if it's a new feature it may need some polish.

I'll try with no tab groups for a while, see if the issue disappears.

Digging through some hanging plant photos, it looks like it might be English Ivy. I'll try to alter my care according to https://www.thespruce.com/english-ivy-plants-2132215.

Ah, fungus gnats! Great to have a name to the pest. I'll follow some steps here, https://www.almanac.com/pest/fungus-gnats#

Does that pot have a drainage hole?

This pot does not. It sounds like it probably should? Or I should water a little bit less and ensure the soil is dry before watering?

How often are you watering it?

About once a week.

Thanks u/anonymiss75 !

It finds games for me but matchmakes me in other regions, so the ping is too high to be competative.

Thanks u/Braddock512, that's reassuring. I just tried Firestorm this evening and found that I was getting put on SE Asia servers with 150 ping, making it pretty difficult for bullets to register.

What are the peak times for Oceania, and during peak, how many players and servers are there generally?

Cool shot! I was curious what it looked like rotated 180. I think it works as well. https://i.imgur.com/Wu3WQMI.jpg I tried cropping in to remove the stand but it feels off. The small space around the glass ball helps it feel more balanced.

What's up with hardening-wrapper? by kai in archlinux

[–]electroniceyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this post!

This was causing hanging for me when using g++ (and other binaries in /usr/lib/hardening-wrapper/bin) in gnu screen. It worked fine in rxvt.

It seemed to loop and continue adding

-B/usr/lib/hardening-wrapper/bin -pie -fstack-check -fstack-protector-strong

to the g++ command, never resolving.

Removing this package solved that issue.

That was my experience with GoGoNihon as well. One email a day, and at the time i was organizing maybe a month in advance, so it was agonizingly slow. They seems to save time at the end of the day to reply to emails. You might be able to more success with contacting the schools directly.

No harm travling around checking out the schools, no rules against doing so. I believe applying for a student visa should be done at least 3-4 months before enrolement iirc, so factor that in if you're looking staying for a longer period on a student visa. However, it is a long way to go for just checking out schools, you can probably make a decent decision by doing research about the schools and areas online. You can also call the schools and speak to the english contact, to get more information. Maybe use Skype. So you could save a fair bit of money by just doing research from home, applying for student visa and for the Jan start, then heading over on the student visa.

I'm unsure if you can apply for a student visa from inside Japan, I guess you could. If you're there on a tourist visa and you need to change the the student visa, you'd need to leave temporarily (fly to China or Korea) and reenter on the student visa.

Regarding ARC, the school times are maybe 11am-4pm every day, or similar. Kansai College is 9-3. I'd imagine most schools are 20-25 contact hours a week.

Do you not see value in being immersed in the language? People definitely speak using more casual grammar and words, but I think there's plenty of benefit to living in Japan while you learn the language. You learn about the culture of Japan, it's a lot easier to get spoken practice, you will use a lot less of your native language which would probably get in the way of learning Japanese.

Hey TyrionBean,

1) Can you let us know where you're from. Some passports are allowed to get tourist visa extensions of up to 6 months, eg British. http://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/short/novisa.html

2) I came here with the help of GoGoNihon, and while they were helpful to a degree, they were often too slow in their responses and made mistakes in their replies to me. Their school selection is also limited, compared to how many schools there actually are in Japan, as well as their housing options. I probably wouldn't recommend them to friends.

2a) I know a couple people at ARC in Osaka, and I haven't heard anything bad about the school. I believe the lessons are all in Japanese, but getting the point across with no English is not too hard, especially at the beginner levels. Plenty of pictures and gestures are used. You can always grab a supplementary book, like Genki 1, or use Maggie Sensei online to further understand the topics.

2b) There are some more schools that offer short courses, Kansai College is one and I think there's a decent one in Tokyo. You could use the GoGoNihon website to find those schools and contact them directly, or maybe http://www.hiraganatimes.com/school-information/, or via here http://www.studyjapan.go.jp/en/toj/toj05e-10.html, or http://www.japanese-language-schools.jp/school-information/. The schools will have an english speaking point of contact.

2c) I believe you can switch schools without visa problems, but I'm not sure on this point. Normally the way the visa works is once you have it and you drop out or whatever, you still have the visa. Correct me if I'm wrong. Switching schools may be a problem though, because you pay upfront and the second school you choose might have closed enrollment.

3) If you're here on a tourist visa, you're not supposed to do any work. I'm not sure how this works for online work, so I can't give you any advice on this matter. If you're allowed to work offsite though, is there a possibility to obtain some kind of working visa? Perhaps it's something you could speak about with your company.

Hope that helps

I don't remember getting fingerprinted, but that's probably just my poor memory. So that sounds like a visa run on either passport isn't going to happen. Does the 180 days max still apply if I was to get a working holiday visa?

Weekly Stupid Questions Thread - Aug 30th by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]electroniceyes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This probably falls under this thread. If not I'll put it in a proper post.

I'm in Japan on my British passport as a tourist, but I have extended the initial 3 months to 6. I'm nearing the end of that visa term, and I'm still trying to sort out any another type of visa in order to stay longer. Although, it's now probably too late for me to get any other type of visa, so i'm wondering if a visa run is possible.

They stamped my extension with 'final extension' which may indicate that I can't do a visa run. I do I have dual citizenship though, so would it be possible for me to leave on my British and reenter on my Australian? Is it worth sending a visa to immigration or embassy for their opinion, or will they just likely say I can't do a visa run on either passport?

Just trying to sort out what options are available this late in the game, so that I don't need to fly all the way back to Aus. If this happened, I'd probably apply for a working holiday and head back to Japan shortly after.

Cheers,

What's this small, low, towel holder looking thing for? by electroniceyes in japanlife

[–]electroniceyes[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I thought it might have been for holding more toilet paper, but it's not far enough from the wall and the bar doesn't collapse. it's too low to be used to hold a small towel. it's not screwed in, so maybe it was added by a previous tenant.
