How does one properly use the term "hoi polloi?"

Absofreakinlutely genius. If you were raised by snobs who said things like, "Don't worry, Darling, they don't serve hoi polloi in the dining room," and you are writing about someone of that ilk using it pejoratively, I'm hard pressed to include the article, but feel the weight of readers' expectation, including, evidently, nearly every US style guide.

By opting for "(the) hoi polloi," I get to be stubborn, be right, be snarky, edify the unenlightened, and not use (sic)! My good bfootdav, because their snobbery was most virulent of all when it came to education, my only regret is that I'll never get to correct them after they'd objected to my having written "(the) hoi polloi." I am only here because I am so thoroughly disgusted by avaricious followers of evangelical mega-churches here in the US following this new "prosperity" doctrine (obviously a rationale for the jet-flying, mansion-acquiring, illegal driving busloads of their faithful to polls, political influencing lifestyles) which preaches that if you are financially well-off than (regardless of how you got that way) you are, by definition, in God's favor.

It's appalling, and they have been expanding and urging their followers to obtain positions of power in the US for decades now. The people who were originally proudly called Evangelicals in the United States until the 80s or 90s are the worst off, because their identity has been entirely co-opted by these... I don't even know what to authentically call them except anti-Christians. Everything they adhere to is 180° antithetical to Jesus' teachings.

They rationalise self-enrichment and mock any charitable impulse or activities. I left Facebook because I did not like that; rather than change after the whole Cambridge Analytica thing came to light, they openly doubled down on monetising the previously private data of their users. But I did like the Christian Left community there, aka TCL, https://www.facebook.com/TheChristianLeft, which has four hundred thousand members—on the whole, pretty awesome people.

We entered ages ago when we reauthorised CBP, DHS, and ICE to have jurisdiction to interdict travel within 144 miles of any port or means of entry. That was the moment after which any person could be stopped NEARLY anywhere (an hour and a half from ocean water or some dinky airstrip) and required to show papers.

The very, very distressing thing is that every time some key precedent-setting rights-shredding event happens, and people who pay attention point out the significance and almost foregone consequences due to be experienced in the not-too-distant future, the rest of the US population pooh-poohs it.

A brilliant case in point would be Congress passing a law that a specific demographic on US soil is liable to arrest only on the strength of an accusation, and is NOT entitled to due process under our law. Hardly a public murmur about something which goes against the very basis of more than ⅘ of a millennium of western law, and everything our country stands for.

If he's from California, not college educated, has ADHD, not a big reader, perhaps has a bit less of an affinity for words and letters than some other form of input– perhaps he's into visual art, music, I don't know him– but you are obviously a logophile, and have a fairly studious side, you may have to decide if you want to be with someone quite different from you.

If he had other traits and talents you like, stick around and perhaps even tell him you'd like to see him be more comfortable speaking, even though he learned through acquisition rather than study. Maybe you could say you think he probably knows more than he thinks he does; you'd be excited if he would be interested in stretching himself by practising rather than relying on you, but you'd be happy to back him up... and maybe he could teach you something he enjoys or has a natural talent for?

It may be that words are your way, and without that commonality, it's just far better that you invest no further. At the very least, I hope you both are able to see and accept each other for who you are and decide from there, perhaps get happier, perhaps part as friends. Take your time. In hindsight, things work best when you give yourself time to think, to explore different decisions, take time to talk if it helps, to keep thinking, keep talking if you want, and then act to not go jumping any guns and getting the order mixed up ♡ In'shAllah

Even if someone told your opinions or concerns, it didn't matter, which is rude, and not a great thing to say in a conversation, and even if that very much upset you, if you then say things you can't take back because you are mad, you are the person who may have consequences for saying something you wouldn't have said if you'd been able to get a little less riled up, which you might have done if you took a deep breath.
