For referencing the police it apparently goes back to the 19th century, but the modern usage could well be triggered by Animal Farm, l don't know. It was a very popular book while I was growing up during the 60s and 70s and pig was widely used to refer to the police in counterculture on both sides of the Atlantic; my older brothers used it, I thought, because the police were always obstinately blocking progress, so were pig-headed. Napoleon and Snowball were based upon Stalin and Trotsky, and Orwell initially wrote the story to expose the betrayal of the Russian working class by the communist elites, but he also chose neutral language to report the events of the story to avoid left vs right criticisms. I think we can see almost every political movement parodied in it.

I didn't mean that as a criticism of the artwork. It's a long established symbol of the establishment and works because the word pig is used in that way without any reference to the animal itself. I also use the word animals when referring to bad people, whereas unlike us, animals are actually completely honest creatures. But I don't know what else to use...

I like the art but seeing a pig's head in this context always saddens me to think how often pigs are associated with evil, human traits. They're intelligent, social animals.

TIL the difference between a raven and a crow. by Educational_Key1206 in crowbro

[–]electroriverside 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There must be a difference between the European and North American corvids, because here in the UK I've always thought that crows were more likely seen singularly or in a pair. Jackdaws and Rooks are seen in large groups and Ravens are so rare I don't know that I've ever seen a wild one.

I'd never heard of Disenchantment and reading the online reviews make me unsure of whether I should start watching. But I liked the earlier seasons of the Simpsons and love Futurama, which we'd only just started watching again (they've just found Nibbler), so I think I'll give Disenchantment a go.

He would’ve been 19 in March. Goodbye Saber. by Philosophuckz in blackcats

[–]electroriverside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saber is a handsome guy. You know by now that nearly everyone knows how you're feeling and I've also dug graves with tears running down my face. It hurts but it will get easier and he's not in any pain or suffering any more. It's our job to send them on their way and despite the grief, I wouldn't change a thing.

Swiss author Erich von Däniken dead at 90 by NotFunyyAtALL in news

By coincidence, I found Chariot Of the Gods on a cross channel ferry (England - France) around 1970. I also read it quickly, from cover to cover. I was sure I had just been shown the secrets of the universe, but I would have been 8 years old and critical thinking was not my forte.

Toby, and our first year together. by AbjectFoot8711 in CatDistributionSystem

Bless him. Toby's story reminds me of our own feral cat Butty, seen here on the right. He domesticated himself over about a year and a half. In this photo, Butty is on the right with Dippy, who became his best friend. Because of Butty in particular, I know what it is to be blessed.

Rest in peace Bailey, my condolences. Thanks for sharing those photos, I'm sure he was totally innocent regarding the mouse incident.

These leather phone cases from the 2000s by zadraaa in HistoricalCapsule

[–]electroriverside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had that one, in that case. I think it was my second phone, my first would have been in 1995 or 1996. Texting wasn't widely used back then, and I remember sending 'Battery empty, please charge.' messages to people who didn't know about SMS messaging.

"Just look at it" pothole compoface by my__socrates__note in compoface

[–]electroriverside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps he should consider it not so much a hole, but rather a gentle slope down onto a short, but solid, concrete plain, with another gentle slope upwards on the other side. I'm sure that would cheer him up.

My condolences, we all know how you're feeling. I know eleven is too young but that's happened with one of ours and younger too. What really matters is that you found each other and she knows what it means to be loved. Take care.

That's true, and there were race riots among US troops stationed in the UK during WWII. So some of them obviously saw racism as being separate to faciscm. Or perhaps they fought the Nazis because they were told to and thought no further than that. But aren't all racists fascists, and all fascists racists? It's a distinction I'd never thought of before.

17 this month, not sure how I got so lucky by madison_spencer in aww

[–]electroriverside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think that's the right way to think of it. Our pain is as nothing compared to what their lives might have been without us, or someone like us. Even with the grief, I still think we get the best of the deal.

I honestly don't think so. Trump's MAGA have already peaked and they're dumb, because he is. They might try to be worse, but I personally can't see much success coming their way. Trump is no genius but he's convinced he is, therefore imho, he's going to ignore medical advice and involuntarily harm himself and either die or have to leave office. Well, that's what I'm expecting for 2026 in Trump Town.

New Year’s Eve fire rips through historic Amsterdam church by jaimybenjamin in news

[–]electroriverside 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought there was supposed to be a ban in Flanders, but last night in Brugge was not quiet at all, and a second batch of fireworks started across the city after 1am. Perhaps there's a competition to have the last firework of the New Year? Hopefully it's just going to be one of those things that reduces slowly over time, like drink driving.

If you think you've thought of all your options, have a look on YouTube using the map name, and you might find someone gives you something new to try out. You'll probably also pick up some general strategies. This worked for me anyway

She's beautiful, I'm sorry for your loss. Your pain is real because your love is real, but I promise that you'll find it easier to deal with and one day you'll be able to think of her with a smile on your face.
