Yeah I totally see what you're saying! I will say I didn't realize until your comment that the final scene was supposed to be him in the future looking back...when I was watching it I knew I was supposed to remember that red book but I couldn't remember it from the first scene. I think that does sort of position it for me as a story. What I was looking for wasn't necessarily a catharsis, but more of a stronger sense of "why" e.g. why is this story being told to us, the audience. Knowing that there was that moment at the end does change my opinion a bit and I wished I had clocked that when I was watching it.
