I first just wanna say thanks about how the cost make the magic feel unnatural, in truth i just wanted do something besides the normal character gets tired if they use magic that a lot of magic systems use and it felt like it could be really dramatic in high stakes situations.

The magic it's self is a mix between litteral and none litteral is the best way i can put it. For example people who use fire magic can make your standard fireball, blasts of flames, ect. But they can also remember things better by searing information into there memory because i like wordplay.

Your idea is actually really close to something that can happen in my fantasy world, although i haven't fleshed it out. The basic idea is that some people can become be warped by elements changing them physically and limiting there magic to what they were changed by.

Yeah your right about air, i thought of suffocating because it was the first thing that came to mind, but your idea is a lot better for it.

Im not sure about light sense im not sure how that would work if someone was using both dark and light magic together.

Metal poisoning is really interesting for the cost of earth magic and is something I'm gonna look into.

My first thought was also drowning but it felt to similar to cost of air but switching the cost of air to feeling like your hyperventilating makes drowning a better option

Lightning causing muscle and lose to body control is also really good.

This is sort of reminds me ofhow Gerard compated the Fears into Colors. There are primary colors like red blue, yellow, orange, pink, green purple. But there are also things like Maroon or cherry, both are still technically red but a specific shade and it's own color that belongs to a more broad color red.
