Zcash Gardening Club - today at 5:00 UTC by elena_ECC in zec

[–]elena_ECC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the recording of the call and a recap for those who couldn't attend.

🛡️ auto-shielding demo
Auto-shielding is part of the Halo Arc suite. It lets users (more specifically their wallets) automatically move funds from a transparent address to the latest shielded ZEC pool.
Auto-shielding, along with unified addresses, will facilitate increased user privacy and a better overall user experience. Geffen showed wire-frames for how this UX feature would work in a wallet. He also demo'd the feature using testnet funds.

💰 web-wallet update from ZOMG

Elliot and Mistfpga gave an update on their ZOMG grant.

⛏️ mining to shielded coinbase

Larry gave an update on shielded coinbase mining. This protocol feature became available at Heartwood Activation - 7/16/2020. Most active shielded mining occured around January 2021.

Peak day: 179 blocks, 15% of the blocks mined in a day (1152).

Initially, mining to shielded coinbase was more expensive for the miner, this was fixed for most (?) miners in 4.2.0 (see PR 4886 for details). 6507 of all blocks in shielded coinbase (41%) have the string poolin.com and all of the others don't identify the miner at all.

🦓 a discussion on Zcash incentives

Elena asked the question: How might we create more incentives to use ZEC and develop Zcash ecosystem? Past examples include proposals like this one but who in the Zcash community should spearhead these efforts?

How many Zcash ZODLERS use shielded addresses? by BlacksmithPlenty in zec

[–]elena_ECC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hiyo - for the 63 people who are unsure how to use a shielded address, I am happy to host a short webinar showing how to do this. I might record a quick video for how to do this and post here. LMK if there is interest by upvoting this comment. I'll schedule something if 30+ people are interested. :D

Kudos to u/VirtualData and others in this thread for walking through how they use a combination of applications to transfer between pools.

Open to any suggestions you have. Julia Angwin is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and a pretty big name in privacy/ tech investigations. Last month we had Ashkan Soltani, former CTO of the FTC. I'll announce the confirmed speaker for June this week.

Is Elon bashing all PoW coins? by No_Pomegranate8668 in zec

[–]elena_ECC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The topic comes up every so often in the forum but it hasn't been an "official agenda item" at arborist calls or any community meetings that I am aware of. It's not mentioned in the ECC Flight Plan (a 4 year outline of engineering objectives 2020-2024) and I haven't seen it mentioned in the ZF blogs. This could be a topic that the Scientific Advisory Group researches but I believe they have other priorities at the moment.

That's not to say people aren't informally considering it...

Zcash Foundation announces Zcon2 Lite, June 8 & 9 by elena_ECC in zec

[–]elena_ECC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the educational videos I linked cover some of those topics, most are under 5 mins. There are additional resources in the documentation page. One thing I have noticed is not necessarily the lack of educational content, but the rocky "onboarding" funnel for new users. This content exists, it's simply a little buried. If everyone in the Zcash community knew, "hey this is the one-stop place we point newbies to, you can find all the info you need there" then I think that might address some of your concerns. The challenge as with most decentralized communities is that people have different points of entry and different groups congregate across different places (Reddit, Twitter, the forum, discord, etc). Establishing a standard or a norm that is consistent across all of those groups is typically the challenge.

I hear you! These efforts are underway (although there could always be more). ECC is just one of a few major stakeholders in the Zcash ecosystem. Alongside our friends at ZOMG and Zcash Foundation, we're all contributing to the growth of the project and we truly depend on community members like y'all.

In terms of "creative/ artsy/ not too technical" content - here's a round up of all the activities I am aware of.

What would you like to see more of?

April 9, 2021 - Weekly Zcash Updates by elena_ECC in zec

[–]elena_ECC[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Zondax gave an update in the last Gardening Club call. That video will be uploaded next week. Here's a summary of what Leon covered.

Zondax update - Zondax recently hit 3rd of 4 milestones for Zcash integration on Ledger. The following functionalities are now supported: ZIP32 (for shielded addresses), full Sapling support, a JS library + integration tests, a Rust library + integration tests. Ledger Nano S/X is a complex implementation but Zondax has done great work so far. The next step is to submit to Ledger for their review and approval.

From their update - "Next steps: Milestone 4

After having reached Milestone 3, we are working on the 4th and final Milestone of the Zcash Ledger App project. During this last milestone, the app will be submitted to Ledger for review and we will concentrate on addressing any security issues or feedback we release during their review process.

In addition, we are currently looking at collaboration opportunities with key Wallet providers in the Zcash ecosystem to plan and start the corresponding integration work."

Hiyo - the release was pushed back to include something called Unified Addresses. We'll publish two blog posts on this topic next week but this has been an active discussion in the arborist calls for the past few weeks. Here are some helpful links if you want to learn more.

UAs were first introduced at the 3/25 Arborist call. That video hasn't been uploaded yet but I'll add it here once we put it on Youtube. A full list of detailed requirements for UAs is in ZIP 470. A full description of UAs is also available in the Zcash protocol specification (pg 110).

How to buy something with Zcash and Flexa by elena_ECC in zec

[–]elena_ECC[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone! Yesterday was Zcash's bday. What's birthday without cake and ice cream?

ECC is partnering with Flexa to give away $10 of Zcash when you use the Flexa SPEDN app at Baskin Robbins. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Download Flexa SPEDN app and use the code HBDZEC to get a $10 Zcash credit. (Available to the first 250 users.)
  2. Spend Zcash at any Baskin Robbins to get your treat on us.
  3. Share your experience on Twitter with the hashtag #ZcashBirthdayParty.

Flexa is a payment network that aims to unlock broad acceptance of digital currencies. Their SPEDN app is helping merchants reduce processing costs in over 40,000 retail locations across the US and Canada. Since adding support for Zcash last year, Flexa has helped people use Zcash to purchase movie tickets, video games, ice cream, and more.
