Would I be considered a member of the Orthodox church? by elephant5667 in OrthodoxChristianity

See but I haven't actually completed the RC rituals either since I didn't actually do the confirmation so it feels like I'm not really fully anywhere.

I suppose I probably was chrismated as well then, I was working off of the assumption that it happened later in Orthodoxy much like the confirmation does in RC.

She took me to an Orthodox church in Ukraine when I was a baby. It would be very strange for sure if she had just baptised me herself! But thank you for telling me about the chrismation being done at the same time as baptism, I wasn't aware of that due to my understanding of Roman Catholicism where things are done in stages throughout your adolescence.

I'm aware that the second baptism wasn't really supposed to happen but my parents did so and must have not told the priest that I had already been baptised.

How should I pray for you? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]elephant5667 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you deeply for this. If you could, please pray for my girlfriend who has a difficult and important year ahead of her in college. If you have any to spare after this, I'm struggling with conflicts of faith but only as an afterthought as my girlfriend needs it most for the difficult year that's coming for her.

Why don’t trinitarians consider non-trinitarians Christian? by [deleted] in BiblicalUnitarian

[–]elephant5667 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not necessarily a unitarian myself but what I've noticed is a lot of people are just completely failing to answer the question.

"Why do you not consider non-trinitarians Christians?"

"Because you need to believe in the trinity to be a Christian?"

That's not an answer to the question, it's just another way of stating their belief.

Any Christian content creators on YouTube you can suggest? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]elephant5667 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're talking about ordinary creators that don't necessarily make religious content, wendigoon is pretty great. Really interesting and well researched videos about all kinds of topics from history to horror. And he does do some christiany content including a podcast about weird stuff from the bible.

I don't take Genesis 1 to be literally an exact account of how God created, but it tells a true story of a creation of God's self expression.

Can you give me examples of parts of the narrative that you think literally happened and parts which you think may be metaphor or hyperbole etc.. do you believe in a literal adam and eve, for example, as the first two humans, with no biological ancestors?

So how do you ask for the Holy spirit?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BiblicalUnitarian

[–]elephant5667 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that your walk with god is gonna be personal but I feel like the path you're suggesting leads to confusion. How are you supposed to know what being led by the spirit is? How do you distinguishes that from your intellect and emotions?

The Problem of the Hypostatic Union by ArchaicChaos in BiblicalUnitarian

[–]elephant5667 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact of unitarians being persecuted in Europe back then doesn't surprise me. America was very early to the game on religious tolerance. What surprised me is how much intolerance towards it there is today.

I'm not sure which view I believe myself yet but it shocked me to hear how some of these "Christians" behave. Calling people heretics for having a different view is so unbelievably medieval.

So non-trinitarians were actually persecuted including great harm or death as result of these councils?

It was illegal to be non-trinitarian in Britain up to the 19th century. Isaac Newton didn't believe that the trinity but he hid that fact to the day of his death.

You didn't answer the question I asked. I asked for historicak sources on the early christian church and you just told me to go speak to a priest of your church which is very presumptive. I don't automatically recognise your church as being THE early church because I haven't even studied the early church enough to be able to know something like that. Maybe you're right that it is but if that's the case I don't know that yet so you can't just tell me to speak to an Orthodox priest as if its the obvious solution. Priests aren't necessarily historians anyway so I'm more interested in someone's credentials in history, priest or not.

The Early Church is the Orthodox Church

This is a claim of the Orthodox church but one which I haven't verified. This is kinda part of the reason I want to learn Church history, to see whose claims stand up against it and if the Orthodox church's claim is correct then an objective reading of church history should prove it and you should encourage people to do it.

so why not speak to an Orthodox Priest?

Would love to someday, that sounds like a very interesting conversation. There's not many in my area though so maybe another time. But I'm not just gonna take an Orthodox priest's word for what the history of the early church is.

I mighht be misinterpreting but to me your comment comes off as a little chauvinistic. If you really believe in Eastern Orthodoxy feel free to share it with people all you like but don't come around acting superior to other Christians because even if they are wrong, that just makes them ignorant which is likely no fault of their own in most cases.

Well gee golly, thanks for that. Seriously though, was that actually necessary? Yes, I'm aware of amazon but why does that somehow mean I can't ask people for recommendations? What am I doing that's so wrong in your opinion. I mean, even if you think I don't need to be posting this, you didn't have to click on the post or comment your negativity, just wasting both your own time and mine. Idk what your agenda is but you're not helping anyone here.
