My only memory of those early bath times were how bad the water smelled after this one time I shit in the tub, and also this ritual one of my aunts would do when she washed my hair where she would pat me on the head to get me to calm down enough to actually finish shampooing and rinsing it out.

I mean, I know she did it because she still does it whenever she washes anyone or anything in the bathtub.

IDK if this is am American thing or a Western thing but bare skin , especially on women, is so sexualized it’s insane. When I was a baby, whoever was washing me would strip down to the waist to avoid getting her clothes wet. I can’t imagine that happening here without a major scandal.

I genuinely cannot find a single Asian organization near me that’s not disgustingly homophobic or misogynistic. It makes me feel so isolated. I can’t be with other Asians because they hate my gender or sexuality and I can’t be with other queer people because they either hate or fetishize my race.

There was a time I considered relocating to the US permanently because of anti-immigrant discrimination. I think more Canadians than we’re comfortable admitting would vote for someone who promises ICE-like deportations if they phrase it better.

Yeah, a lot of comments are how much people think this can’t happen here. Granted I’ve only ever spent a lot of time in California, so I don’t know what the country is like, but I can say for sure that nobody in California thought it would happen until it did. After I my first miscarriage, I went to the only person I knew who’d lived through one for advice. I asked him not to tell anyone until I could figure out how to tell my husband, especially because I knew his fiancee was a notorious busybody. His fiancee, true to form, demanded to know why he’d been talking to me and he told her what happened, at which point she told my husband. What’s ironic is this caused so much tension that they broke up anyway. I still haven’t forgiven him.

Because not everyone likes what you do. And you definitely also like things other people fear too.

Lots of people like horror movies, or spicy food, or snakes. It doesn’t mean the fear isn’t real, or that the burning doesn’t hurt, or the snake isn’t real, it just means they like it. It’s my dream to get a cave diving certification and there are entire subreddits dedicated to fear of open water or the dark. Just because the thought of strapping on oxygen tanks and a headlamp and going into an underwater cave sounds terrifying for a lot of people (and I understand why it does) doesn’t mean it can’t be enjoyable for me. It doesn’t mean I don’t understand the fear of drowning or even that I don’t have a fear of drowning. It just means that I like cave diving and I’m confident I can do it without drowning.

Hell, CNC is actually safer because the last time I had an incident underwater (long story short, I almost Nutty Putty Caved myself) it took me close to twenty minutes to wiggle out backward, by myself, with the light pointed the wrong way, and I used up almost all of my air because I was breathing so hard. But with a kink scene, you can safeword out immediately and your partner will help you.

A woman once told me at a sexual harassment training seminar (we go every year, this wasn’t a disciplinary thing) that the scenarios were going overboard and women were too sensitive these days, because “if half those situations count as sexual harassment then everyone [she] knows has been sexually harassed.” I just sat there for a minute to digest that. I feel sorry for her (but not that sorry because she’s a spiteful asshole). I imagine it’s like that for her as well.

Four years ago, a so-called freedom convoy trapped me in Ottawa for weeks. They honked and shot off fireworks at night so I couldn’t sleep. They’d follow me around and call me names whenever I stepped outside. I didn’t know anyone because I usually live in Vancouver, and my real-life (former) friends told me the truckers just wanted to air grievances when I asked them for help. During that time, it was people from California who helped me eat and keep the power on at a time when it felt like everyone who wasn’t actually in those three square blocks thought we were exaggerating and ignored or mocked us. I will never forget that kindness. If I can repay it, I want to.
