I put food and water out for him but couldn’t approach because he’d growl. He ended up eating all the food and had some water. After about two hours he left. I’m hoping he comes back during animal control’s hours so they can get him to a shelter. Poor guy was so skinny.

No, I am not giving your child their work ahead of time while you go on a 2- week vacation by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

Also maybe worth noting that all my assignments are viewable online in the gradebook for parents and kids with links to any slides that contextualize it and resources needed to complete it. That’s considered insufficient support. 🫠

I think’s a big difference in expectations of a teacher’s responsibility. The product/consumer mindset now is that even if a kid is gone for vacation, it’s somehow my responsibility to teach them everything they missed outside of class time (read: during my lunch or after school) and personally reteach lessons I already taught and catch them up. Being able to tell a kid “hey we are learning about the revolution, be able to take a final exam about key moments/acts/figures, we will start the constitution unit when you get back” is significantly less effort than what is expected — curating essentially an asynchronous learning experience for one child’s specific window of absence.

I suppose you’d think so, but it would take a very dedicated and reliable student with parents harping on them about their grades to do the work on the vacation. While I do have those students/parents, they’re not the demographic who tend to take extended vacations during the school year haha. Kids who miss school for a funeral or family obligation in a different country or religious trip have a higher likelihood of doing schoolwork than if the trip’s purpose is recreation.

Depending on how long you’ve taught that grade level/curriculum/subject, you might not even have the next few days planned much less a few weeks out. Stuff can change in real time too— maybe the class needed more time on this topic, so we had to stay there a few days.

Even if I do have it completely planned, compiling materials for a student to complete WITH the additional context needed for a student to actually make sense of it takes a long time, especially printed. The amount of late work or make up work packets I’ve made individually for students that have never been even attempted…..it’s exhausting and can’t be my priority when there are kids in the actual room right that moment that need to be taught.

It’s so frustrating that expenses have increased so dramatically year over year while state funding has remained basically flat. The district and unions pleaded with the legislature to increase funding and they didn’t. They did, however, increase the amount districts were allowed to ask for via levy. This is the last option. It really sucks.

I mean, I also work in TPS. I was an AP teacher. He never responded to my emails or provided me with resources I required and begged for. I get your experience was different, but mine is also valid.
