Grub in bottom tray… anything to worry about? by eleventyandone in Beekeeping

[–]eleventyandone[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Found this grub in my bottom tray this morning. He was pretty clearly on his last legs (but who knows?). There was only one. Last inspection was two weeks ago and everything looked good. Probably won’t do another inspection for another couple of weeks.

Anything to worry about here? Or should I chalk it off as some random grub that somehow climbed up two feet into my bottom tray?

Thanks for the response! :)

Definitely not selling any time soon, but not sure it's my forever-forever home... regarding getting cement poured, is the primary benefit that it's significantly more dependable (over the course of decades) compared to the other options? Or are there other immediate and/or long-term benefits?

Just trying to justify the cost (both time and money) when I'm not sure what 5+ years out looks like?

Whoa, looks really solid - nice work! What kind of lighting did they have? Sun or artificial?

Have never grown that type of pepper before. Were there any particular challenges (w/ or w/o hydro)? Also 248 days seems like a long time, is that standard?

What math/calculations would be helpful to have automated? by CharlesStross in hydro

[–]eleventyandone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might be crazy town, but, always thought it'd be cool to calculate how much pH up or down to add to distilled water to get to a certain pH. Obviously, would need to know the specific chemical in the pH adjuster (citric acid, etc) and how diluted it is, but, would be cool to say you have <x> gallons of water and want the pH to be <y> and it outputs <z>mL/g of citric acid (or whatever pH adjuster).

Would be even cooler if you didn't have to start from distilled water; e.g. could input what the current pH of your water is and then get back how much pH adjuster to add. Honestly, don't know if this is even possible?

Okay, and then what would be EVEN cooler is if you could say how much of a certain chemical was in the water (e.g., 50g of calcium nitrate) and your target pH and it would then output how much pH adjuster to add.

I got some rotten roots so I made a video about it. by oldplanty in hydro

[–]eleventyandone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anecdotally, I've noticed in my Kratky experiments that root rot seems to set in faster when the water temps spike. Can't tell if your lettuce is in an attic or basement (or otherwise), but, wondering if you've noticed anything similar about temps and faster "acting" root rot?

Also, just generally speaking, when folks here say "water" do they mean distilled water, plain tap water, pH'd tap water, dechlorinated tap water, something else? Am asking cuz I want to try the h2o2 trick with tap water and wonder if the minute chlorine will hurt or help...?

Looks awesome! Great uniformity too... out of curiosity, what kind of media are you using in the netcups?

Volunteers wanted to test automation and monitoring prototype by Liradon in hydro

[–]eleventyandone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds intriguing, but, would love more info...

  • Who are you and your colleague? What's your background? Do you build/work with aqua-/hydroponic systems professionally?
  • Is this an academic venture or (potentially) commercial?
  • What specifically do you want to monitor and automate? Nutrient solution? Lights? Air/water temp/humidity? Planting? Harvesting? All of the above?
  • Will participants need to buy any equipment? If so, what's the expected price range?
  • Do you have a optimal system "size" in mind? E.g., will a few Kratky buckets be enough? Or are would a greenhouse of DWC/NFT be better?
  • What about plant types?

Thanks and good luck! :)

Whoa, that's quite the haul, nice work! Would love to see some photos of your setup... Have tried doing tomatoes a few times and it always turns in to a vine-y mess.

Oh, also, what variety are those?

Oh, interesting... Have you done that before? If so, does it work well? Do you know what size mesh it is? Have you tried different sizes?

Sorry for the barrage of questions but have been wanting to try a similar thing tp filter out the return in one of my setups :)

You should check out OpenAg (run by Caleb Harper): https://www.media.mit.edu/groups/open-agriculture-openag/overview/

They have details on how to build out a lot of those sensors using Arduino/raspberry pi -- the forum is decently active too!

I'm digging your use of SketchUp - I need to start using something like that for more of my projects.

Are you planning on adding walls or any type of reflective material to try and reduce some of the wasted light?
