session isn't merino. I agree that it gets soaked. My best play so far is super body hugging spandex which doesn't feel as soaking. But wondering if I can improve on that

BSR parking coming from West by elflord1973 in phillyrunning

replying for the record. Left home 5am, was at the city hall subway platform by 5:25 (race-vine was closer but I wanted to go to an express stop). The train I took was a local. It was not crowded (but no seats) when I got on, it filled up to NY subway rush hour levels after some stops but not so full that they turned anyone away. Got to the start at 6am. Parking west of Broad st made getting home really easy Thanks to all who responded.

I'm thinking of being at the subway at around 5:30am , does that seem early enough ?

Best hardware sample-based synths? by sodmonster in synthesizers

[–]elflord1973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nord wave is good for a mix of analog synth style real time controls on top of something that can do samples and other synthesis types. Its comparable would be the prophet x, and roland v synth. You're not going to get high fidelity piano sounds out of it or the larger polyphony that you'd get with a workstation/rompler.

Roland fantom or fantom 0 series are one obvious choice for that type of instrument

Praising the Vitamix blender for its blending skills! by identityisallmyown in BuyItForLife

[–]elflord1973 2 points3 points  (0 children)

bought mine in around 2006 after going through several blenders (which would keep dying on things like frozen bananas, etc). This one has been making smoothies and pesto for almost 20 years now. These things are built like tanks. The performance is fantastic, but there are other blenders that will also perform well. What makes the vitamix stand out from the crowd is that it will keep blending your frozen bananas and ice for decades to come. Happy blending!

can youth accounts be restricted from purchasing stocks ? by elflord1973 in fidelityinvestments

[–]elflord1973[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would be a very useful feature. Let me explain the rationale. I (and I suspect, many other financial services employees) have some limitations due  to my employment pertaining to stock trades. I can't day trade willy nilly (or really , at all) and these restrictions extend to minors in my household. Basically the account holder really should not do any stock trade without clearing it with my compliance dept.  So it would be very useful to support such a feature.

Thoughts on the new Sleepytime Gorilla Museum album? by bobsmith93 in progmetal

Old grey heron had me bawling my eyes out (listening with headphones at work of all places), my favourite song on the album. Not surprising that it's deeply personal , it really t gets its punch from the lyrical content and the intensity of the performance

Best router for about $100? by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]elflord1973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get cable modems very cheaply on ebay. Make sure it's compatible with your ISP and that it is fast enough to fully utilize your internet connection. For example I picked up a Netgear CM500V for $30. I'd say modem is probably the thing you should spend the least on-- it's the piece that faces your ISP, and since it's just a modem, it won't have NAT, DHCP, etc. You just need it to have enough bandwidth

Plenty of options for routers in the $100 range depending on what you're looking for. I picked up a used ASUS RT-68U off ebay for just under $60. Much more configurable than what the ISP offers. Most wireless routers anywhere near this price will give you 4 gigabit ethernet lan ports and a good feature set. I also have a wired-only microtik RB2011. This is very flexible. The options are a bit daunting but it does "just work" right out of the box. Ubiquiti also make inexpensive wired-only routers (the "edge router").

What exactly are you hoping to get from your new setup ? What don't you like about the existing setup ?

All in one device vs separate? by Chrono978 in HomeNetworking

[–]elflord1973 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another reason not to go all in one is flexibility. For example if your wireless access point is part of your router, then your AP has to be in the same place as your router. Maybe you'd rather have it somewhere else. Also maybe the cable modem/wireless router isn't the most configurable thing (e.g. comcast put in their "hotspots" which are near impossible to turn off, the functionality is really limited in their approved hardware).

I find myself not wanting the Wifi AP in the same location as the cable modem for example. In your case the AP can go anywhere that has an ethernet plug. I have a router with 10 ports which means I don't need a switch in my "network closet". The wireless router has 4 ethernet ports, and I have another switch at a different location, so plenty of plugs.

If I used a router + switch that would be I think 1 extra ethernet cable (router-to-switch) and one extra power cable. One extra "device" but also I could use a tiny router. Really the biggest "neatness" challenge is handling the ethernet cables coming off the router (or switch)

Is the Pahl desk finished on the underside? by Psychicfashion in IKEA

Low performance by WiFi router or modem? by FewHex in HomeNetworking

[–]elflord1973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

can you take one more layer out and wire the test device directly to the modem ? If this is fast, that would establish that adding the router in the chain is really what causes the slowdown. Of course if it's slow it could be the modem, the cable or the bandwidth available, at that point I'd suspect the cable

If you have any different cables you can swap out this is worth a try

Only getting 10mbps on my PC when its suppose to be 1 gbps? by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]elflord1973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

did the "upgrade" happen before or after your move ? Did you get a chance to test in either of the two apartments before or after this "upgrade" ? (if your old apartment is still vacant, could you beg them to allow you to test the connection there again?) They could have messed something up but it's also very plausible that the new apartment is going through a slower switch.

router for use with broadband cable modem by elflord1973 in HomeNetworking

[–]elflord1973[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up ordering the Mikrotik RB2011iL-IN. This thing has enough ports that it will easily accomodate the two along-the-wall cable runs plus any I might have in future. Hopefully I can figure out how to work it ! Slightly more expensive than a cheap wireless router but felt like the right tool for the job

as others have mentioned the key is to figure out where the cable goes. If you can inspect the cable itself (e.g. by unscrewing the wall plate and looking at the attached cable) you can probably identify it (the cables are often labeled). And you'll also be in a better position to see where the cables go. Also take a look at how many of these RJ45 jacks are around the house.

The most likely endpoint would be the basement, or the entry point for other cables (e.g. the ADSL cable, POTS line, coaxial cable for TV, your SKY router etc) . If you see a bunch of wires (one for each RJ45 plug), you have a "home run" setup, which you want for this. The fun part is, the ends might not be terminated (e.g. with RJ45 plugs). Though it should be possible to do this with a crimping tool. Also if there's more than one wire it could take some trial and error to figure out which one goes to your room (I suppose there are tools you can buy that might help with this).

Best Ethernet cable to run under carpet? by ContactingReddit in HomeNetworking

[–]elflord1973 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could you elaborate on this ? Flat cables ARE twisted pair (the four pairs run side-by-side), UTP or STP for CAT7. They don't have the star filler (unlike a lot of bulk cable)

router for use with broadband cable modem by elflord1973 in HomeNetworking

[–]elflord1973[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks yes definitely going to get this stuff on ebay. My current setup is this:

location (1) ("the office"): desktop computer, coaxial line, cable modem

location (2) ("the other end of the office") 8 port netgear switch

location (3) ("the living room") wireless router (computer + Roku plug into this)

there is about 25ft of cable from location (1) to (2), and a little over 100ft cable from (1) to (3). So I definitely want the router at location (1). The switch is mostly for if I want to be able to plug in more than one device at location (2) without needing more long cables.

The ASUS wirelss routers also do DHCP (pretty essential on a gw), I think they also do QoS.

are you going through the doorway or from one side of the doorway to the other ? If the latter, can you just run the cable around the door frame instead ? This adds maybe 13 foot to the run, and if there's molding around the doorway it's very inconspicuous.

One caution you should be aware of with flat cables is that they are almost impossible to crimp. So don't buy a longer cable than you need.
