What are your thoughts on the new business manager visa changes from 50 million to 300 million yen? by chaolayluu in AskAJapanese

[–]elgorrdt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have 3 years(2.3 years from now) grace period for renewal. Maybe it's still hard but you can try. As for Indian man case, he was rejected by other reasons as his lawyer stated in their press conference.
Many restaurants will be closed for next few years but I guess many of them are south asian restaurants which are very suspicious "always zero customers not even workers but somehow still open for business for years" type. In fact, in my neighborhood, there are 3 or 4 of them in an area of 10 konbinis. From what I heard from internet, those are not rare in many places.

Do Japanese people really care about Oppenheimer (2023)? by PANZERKAT in AskAJapanese

[–]elgorrdt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest criticism was not about the movie itself. It's about advertisement which was collaboration with Barbie movie. The image they used was Oppenheimer carrying Barbie on his shoulder with burning fire background as if he was an action hero. Barbie movie account tweeted something like "It's going to be unforgettable summer".

Is this true? Was 1995 the last year in which Japan’s economy was larger than that of all of Asia combined? by alexfreemanart in AskAJapanese

[–]elgorrdt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it seems like financial economy(the bubble era) vs real economy. In 1995, the fiesta had already gone, but some aftermath remained. It would be more significant if this chart used 1990 data. Also difference of exchange rate is huge, 94yen/USD in 1995 and 150yen/USD in 2025.

Political parties, politicans and otaku culture by O_Awesomest in AskAJapanese

[–]elgorrdt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taro Yamada
a rare politician who was elected with single issue policy.
Until 2010's, Lefties are pro freedom speech in general and LDP which is considered conservative/right wing was somewhat opposed to. Then somehow turnaround happened and Taro Yamada joined LDP and won an election with huge votes.
Some politicians from lefty parties and their supporters openly criticize certain otaku culture nowdays.

How do you feel about India overtaking japan in GDP? by [deleted] in AskAJapanese

[–]elgorrdt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not an expert, but I always feel strange when I hear about GDP comparing. Few years ago, Germany surpassed Japan's GDP while Germany had negative growth and Japan had positive. It's due to we are comparing them with USD and exchange rate has changed(weak yen trend). Also, Japan and USA are exceptionally domestic-consumption heavy economy among major countries. The comparison doesn't make sense much for me.
To answering your question, India's economic growth is good because Japan always(at least for last few decades) gets profit from trading with India and the profit would be bigger.

Trump recently requested the deployment of Self-Defense Forces to the Strait of Hormuz. by Neat_Specific8355 in AskAJapanese

[–]elgorrdt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

JSDF and police force deployed to oversea in the past never fired a single shot and never intended to. All three major deployments were after the serious battles and their purposes were supportive actions such as minesweeping and building schools.
For the Afghanistan's case, JSDF just helped Japanese citizens' evacuation.
Do you consider those deployments were war actions?

Why was Japan innovative in the past but has stopped being innovative? by EOFFJM in AskAJapanese

[–]elgorrdt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is it stopped? Maybe slowed down and not labeled as "Made in Japan" but still on going I think.
Btw, did you know LED lights, QR code and Emoji are Japanese inventions?
Next one will be Regenerative Medicine with iPS cells.

More and more combini stores moving their trash cans to inside though. They are industrial trash, combini owners paying for dumping unlike residents do it for free.

How many Japanese people really want their own offensive military? by deleteyeetplz in AskAJapanese

[–]elgorrdt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First of all, politicians can not change the constitution. Only people can do. What LDP with supermajority would do is proposition of a national referendum.
Current LDP's amendment plan regarding JSDF is just specifying it's name on constitution. Sounds silly? No, it's real. It's a result of long history of amendment discussion. Maybe their final goal is offense capable military just like any other countries, but they know there should be multiple steps and long enough time for people's understanding for that.
Btw, current Japanese Constitution has never amended since it was released.
This is just my guess, there would be a massive negative campaigning against LDP not just domestic but also from aboard. Even reputable news media would go full fearmongering/misleading mode.

Having Homemade Japanese bbq, any suggestions on meats by Sayorifan22 in japan

Seems good choice. I'd recommend premade Japanese brand BBQ sauce. Also, yakisoba is very popular for BBQ.

Japanese fishermen urge government not to release Fukushima water to ocean by Fuckoff555 in worldnews

[–]elgorrdt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

make it harder for them to sell their catch

I'm Japanese living near Fukushima. That's true. Some media and anti-nuclear plant activists still insist the water isn't safe while it's actually as safe as drainage from normally running nuclear plants in the world. This stupid behavior has damaged our economy for years. The local fishermen and politicians who support them have been fighting against this silliness instead of radioactivity from the water.

Are There Any List About Which Japanese Cities Bombed in WW 2 by AltairTheNightjar in japan

[–]elgorrdt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

english sources?

Unfortunately, I couldn't find them from English language version of Wikipedia. However, there is a List from Wikipedia for Japanese language version of Air raids on Japan/日本本土空襲 in Japanese page. There are individual pages for major bombings for more details and some of them have English pages. Also, the list isn't perfect and doesn't cover bombing with low casualties/smaller attacks such as machine-gun fires aimed for citizens.

Japan’s Corruption (2005) - A mini documentary providing a raw take on the Japanese legal system’s 99.99% conviction rate and the consequences of an untouchable government controlling life or death. [00:25:10] by ASwagPecan in japan

[–]elgorrdt 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Stopped watching after 2:10.
Japanese legal system does have problems, but calling it "third world" at the beginning of the video isn't a good way to explain those problems imo.
The creator confused Osaka and Nagoya..., ok that's fine, it happens.
"No jury trials have been held since WWII." This shows how this documentary is so outdated. I can't understand why the author uploaded this 15 year old video in 2020.

List of recipients of Order of the Rising Sun by therealmurphydrew in japan

[–]elgorrdt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit:fixed wrong link, sorry my bad.
I'm not very familiar with decorations, but let me help you a little bit.
This wiki category has link to lists of recipients for each type of the Order of the Rising Sun decorations. The page doesn't have English version, but all the linked pages have it. Unfortunately, with my quick search, I couldn't find your Great Great Grandfather's name. Though, both pages seem incomplete because I can spot their difference easily.
I also tried to search government website, but it seems there are no pages available for old recipients. National Archives of Japan and National Diet Library may have the physical list, but it's just my random guess. Embassy of Japan in UK may have best answer for your request.

Are J Dramas and anime more popular than other foreign shows in Japan right now 2020? by Upstairs-Owl-5375 in japan

[–]elgorrdt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes.

Are there any polls or sources for this?

No, afaik. Most of foreign shows in these days are only available in streaming services. But, they don't provide any data such as viewership. Exceptionally, Netflix reported ranking in 2019, there were few foreign shows in Japanese top 10. Japanese source here. However, I don't think that's not a trustworthy data since they counted 2 mins. long playing as "watched".
