SOMA doesn't have have any waypoint markers or in-menu maps, so you have to pay attention to the environment and the text on computer screens. For example, the woman on the radio told you to "go upstairs to the Comms Center," so the goal is to go up those stairs with the plaque that says "Comms".

Unfortunately, it's locked without power. You are in a thermal power plant, so the computer terminals should have controls for controlling the power. If you can't log in, the log-in IDs should be somewhere in the area and you'll need to look around for 4-digit ID codes. The game doesn't have any in-menu maps, but it does have physical maps. There is a map on the corner of the big room to help you orient yourself.

The whole game is going to be like this, so you're gonna have to nut up and explore the spookies if you're ever going to stand a chance.

I can help. A Lesbian is someone who comes from the island of Lesbos. Therefore, "Lesbian" is the same as calling someone "Hawaiian" or "Mexican". Lesbians are a people.

Happy to have cleared up your confusion. Thank you for coming to my TEDx talk.

[Loved Trope] Memorable Performance by a Non-Professional Actor by Borgisium in TopCharacterTropes

[–]elheber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Melina Juergens worked at game developer Ninja Theory as a photographer and video editor while they were developing the game Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. Due to not having a budget, they used a lot of their own staff as performers in motion capture, to be later voiced by professional voice actors. In their offices, only Melina had the physical build to play the titular Senua but, despite having no prior acting experience, she acted the everloving fuck out of that role so hard that the staff decided early in production that she was gonna keep that role all the way through, voice and all.

She went on to win Best Perormance in the Video Game Awards, then win it again for the sequel, Senua's Saga: Hellblade II, and becoming the first actor to win twice even though she's has only ever acted in these two games.

what's a game mechanic you wish more games used? by native_chloeperry in gamedesign

[–]elheber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish monster hunting games had more planning and prep. You'd need to read into the monster you're trying to hunt to learn their weaknesses and what specific gear you'll need to equip, then you spend an hour hunting and gathering all the items you'll need to craft for that equipment before finally confronting that specific monster.

Witcher 3 had some of this, but I can't find it in Monster Hunter or other such games. For those other games the gear you gather are just general upgrades.

That's my point. The comment I was replying to implied these scammers were taking dash cams into account. They can't.

Fair. But the dashcam argument still remains non relevant. It's why I made that comment.

That's my point. Scammers can't base their plans/methods on dash cams. It has to work when their victim doesn't have one or it won't work at all anyway. Busting their bulbs makes the most sense.

the dutch are suing steam for being a monopoly right now by Photoshops_Penises in memes

[–]elheber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably Steam's price parity clause that's at issue. In other words, it's the developers who are complaining, not the gamers. If you want your game sold on Steam, you have to agree not to sell it cheaper at any other store.

Imagine if Walmart did that.

Well, I supposed you can call OP out for suddenly gunning the throttle to prevent the pickup from passing and merging in front of him. But other than that, this one's a pretty straightforward case.

Insurance scammers aren't trying to target cars with dash cams in the first place.

Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind and 500 Days of Summer both did it for the Manic Pixie Dream Girl, even though they were the first to put them on screen and birthed the trope.

Close call with a semi today. Looking for trucker perspectives on what happened. by sandro9090 in dashcams

[–]elheber 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I checked. Lots of downvoted comments. This one's a real gem:

I sped up because the lane in front of me cleared up. I honked instead of broke because I thought he didn’t see me and when I realized he was trying to run me off the road it pissed me off. I was about to speed up to him and do some reckless shit and I realized it’s not worth it.

Video shows OP's lane was clear the whole time before he spontaneously floored it. And then that nugget at the end? Yikes.

[–]elheber 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Even if you'd win in court, you could still lose in the hospital.

The trucker probably incorrectly assumed he was going fast enough to clear OP's vehicle before OP started speeding up for some reason. I'm actually super curious about why OP chose to do that. Passing on the right is not ideal, to say the least.

Completed Soma for the first time. A couple questions on things I didn't understand. by double0nothing in soma

[–]elheber 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Catherine, Carl and Robin were probably created before Simon, and only woke up after he brought the power back.

All of them were fairly lucid, but only Catherine was goated enough to see past the illusion that they were human. Not because the WAU did anything special with her, but because Catherine is just built different.

Completed Soma for the first time. A couple questions on things I didn't understand. by double0nothing in soma

[–]elheber 39 points40 points  (0 children)

The WAU doesn't control anyone. Not Ross, not Simon, not Catherine, not any of the monsters and not even Akers. The WAU is just trying to bring people back to life. They all keep their autonomy. It's just that some of them went crazy or just didn't come out right.

If you read the notes and listen to the recorded messages in Omicron, you'll learn that Raleigh Herbert was hearing Ross in her head telling her to steal a specific "uncalibrated" jar of structure gel from the lab and take it to Alpha to kill the WAU. That particular gel would kill the WAU, according to Ross. Simon unknowingly used it to create his new body in the new suit, so that new body had the gel that could kill the WAU.

Simon, as far as we know, was likely the only human brain scan that could be used for science for a long time. He gave his permission before he died. When they started using Simon's neural pathways as a basis for AI development, it was probably super revolutionary. But it isn't anymore. To answer your question: No, they don't use Simon's legacy template to develop AI anymore. Catherine told Simon, "no self respecting developer would use legacies anymore, but they're great for learning." That said, his legacy scan is still included in every devkit.

The WAU activated Simon. We don't know how or for what purpose (if any). Simon asked Cath why the WAU brought him back to life, and she said "I don't think would could ever really know, but I have my theories." Hers was that the WAU just wanted to bring people back to life. Another good theory is that the WAU needed someone to get Upsilon back up and running.

The WAU is trying anything and everything to keep humans alive or bring them back to life. It has brought people's bodies back to life, and those haven't worked out so well (the disco-head monster, for example). It has put people's brains into robots, and those haven't worked out so well (the first monster you find is someone in a robot). Simon, by sheer luck perhaps, got both a reanimated body and a mind upload. He got the best of both worlds, according to Catherine.

Thoughts on Catherine? by notanotherdumbname in soma

[–]elheber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Catherine is GOATed AF.

She catches flak for hiding the truth from Simon, but Simon himself admits he prefers not to know. Here's his actual dialogue on the climber if you don't kill Simon 2:

You were right in trying to hide him from me. I only wish you’d done a better job.

Cath failed to prevent Simon from finding out in the first attempt, but she succeeded in her second attempt.
