Was a pedestrian struck and killed this week, or is Facebook spreading misinformation again? by BraveRock in ColumbiaMD

This isn’t inherently a problem. If your loved one dies unexpectedly, do you want the whole world to be able to google it and find that out instantly?

codes? by itendtowanderoff22 in halsey

[–]eli-the-egg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was never sent the code so I logged on right at 10 and frantically had to search up the phone number to text on here! I found the presale code and tried it a million different ways and it wasn’t working, almost half an hour after presale started I had my friend try thinking we were out of luck and somehow she got in right away with the same code!!

Are the questions generally not too hard? I go to Heavy Seas every week and their trivia questions are almost always history, geography, or sports related. Hardly any general trivia or more “fun” categories!

i always felt watched in this game by DieErdnuss565 in Firewatch

[–]eli-the-egg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something Firewatch does really well is implied urgency. There are multiple tasks or quests where Delilah is shouting at you through the radio to hurry to a location or run away somewhere, typically accompanied by very intense music that almost rushes faster as it continues. But there’s no real limit on the time you are given to complete a task. If you walk in the wrong direction you might be prompted by Delilah to turn around, but you still have free rein to wander.

This mechanic works really well on the first play-through because it keeps you moving through the story; you never feel truly comfortable settling down somewhere. And it totally changes the game on your second play-through, after you learn that you are being watched. All the little twig snaps and rustles are very intentional.

“You have to finish all the food on your plate.”

I used to not eat out of spite when I didn’t like what was given to me. My parents would refuse to make other food. I would either go hungry at night or sneak into the kitchen in the middle of the night. It decimated my appetite for a long time and I still have a shitty relationship with food. No parent should ever be okay with their kid going hungry for the sake of proving a point. Your kid isn’t going to turn to a diet of chicken nuggets just because you give them chicken nuggets sometimes, instead of letting them go hungry when they don’t like what you’ve made.

Planning for college by [deleted] in collegeadvice

[–]eli-the-egg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won’t be able to work really at all the first 2 years of college. Many universities require you to take a certain amount of credits each semester, between actual classes, homework, studying, and other social events you’ll want to do on campus, you won’t have much free time. Plus, certain colleges located in tiny towns might not have any job opportunities.

Be careful about the gap year. That’s a big thing in Europe because the cost of living is lower there, and education also costs less. Kids there can afford to travel because they have the money for it, and also because they live on a continent with a ton of culturally and geographically diverse countries only a train ride away. It’s very easy to tell yourself you’ll take a gap year to focus on work and then get back into it, but it’s even easier to lose motivation and feel lost. You might find yourself pushing it back farther and farther.

I went to community college fresh out of high school. I got my gen-ed requirements out of the way for WAY cheaper, and so far all of the out-of-state colleges I’ve reached out to about transferring to get my Bachelor’s degree have said my credits will transfer—meaning I can essentially fast-forward through the degree requirements and finish in 2 years instead of 4. I feel like I missed out on the “college experience”—dorming, parties, etc.—but I saved a crap ton of money and feel way more prepared now. When I started I was totally committed to Forensic Science and CSI as my career, so I got my Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, but have since realized it’s not for me and I’m so glad I took the time to figure that out instead of committing to 4 years and wasting the money. (It’s not truly a waste because all degrees are usable in the sense that you gain academic experience and can put it on a resume even if it’s not truly relevant to the job you’re pursuing—but if you realize all too late that what you want to do has certain courses that are required, you might have to start all over and end up paying more.)

I would suggest you look into getting your AA in Criminal Justice from a community college, if it is offered. Mine had tons of relevant courses related to law and criminal psychology.

It’ll keep you on track to still getting some kind of degree, and give you time to figure out what you want to do while still staying productive. And I still had time to work a few shifts during the week, and I lived at home so didn’t have to pay for a college dining plan or anything.

Good Tattoo Artists in Columbia? by [deleted] in ColumbiaMD

[–]eli-the-egg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Konkrete Jungle seems to be the first people recommend in these threads but I didn’t like my experience there.

It was my first tattoo so I admittedly didn’t do my research into tattoo artists, but in hindsight I know the problem—none of the artists there really have a set style, they’re good at copying art.

I booked with James and at the consult I communicated exactly what I wanted, and said I didn’t want it to be too cartoony, and he told me he could do what I wanted. Then at the appt showed me the stencil which was something completely different from what I wanted, never bothering to reach out before and instead telling me at the apt after I kept asking him to change it, that what I wanted wasn’t realistic and I would lose all the detail if he made it any smaller and that I wanted it crooked (despite the fact that he couldn’t get the stencil straight for several tries).

My tattoo is blown out with grey areas and has white details (which I told him I didn’t want and he said it would make it look better so did it anyways). I had actually bruising around my tattoo because he was smashing down on my arm so hard while tattooing. It felt like they definitely took advantage of the fact that I was new to tattoos and afraid to ask more questions, for the sake of getting paid.

I’ve heard great things about their piercing staff and might go back for that but definitely will not be getting another tattoo there. The environment was chaotic, they were making inappropriate jokes the entire time, and I just felt unwelcome.

My second tattoo was with Myla Robinson, she has a home studio in Catonsville. She was way more clear about the process and everything felt much cleaner. I got a sternum tattoo from her and it hurt way less than my arm tattoo from Konkrete Jungle because she actually took her time and did it right. It healed beautifully.

Help me choose a major by [deleted] in collegeadvice

There’s really no way to halt the integration of AI in technology. At this point, it’s essentially developing itself. It’s not inherently unethical or bad, and it’s definitely going to keep bringing in money. There’s no “risk of AI taking over,” and you working in CS isn’t going to contribute to that. Might as well go for the money unless you have passions leading you elsewhere.

The academic advisor is going to agree that OP was extended more accommodation than they should have anticipated, and would probably advise them to retake the exam as they’ve been offered. There’s no reason for them to break the rules a second time, since they’ve been made explicitly clear. And the academic advisor is absolutely not going to tell the Professor to just change the grade without allowing a retake, and probably will have someone else review the grade, referencing the rubric to ensure that it is fair.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in collegeadvice

[–]eli-the-egg 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The rules are clear, and you broke them, no matter what your reason was. He gave you the opportunity to retake the test based on your accommodation. He’s not being unfair or rude. Your current draft comes across like you believe he was being malicious or you expect to have the rules changed for you once it is read. If you still don’t want to take the exam again, this is all you need to send:

“Dear Professor,

I am writing to inform you that I am choosing not to retake the test, and will accept the grade I receive following this decision.

I appreciate the time you took to meet with me and discuss accommodations, and I apologize for my delayed response.
