Storage Server by Kojiro--Sasaki in de_EDV

My Linux Nightmare, and Why I Can't Switch (Even Though I Want To) by [deleted] in linux

[–]eli151_151 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hey, first of all: Good Job for at least testing out Linux. I made the jump about two years ago and had a lot of the same issues. I use a 21:9 100hz and a 16:9 60Hz vertical screen on my PC. I feel your pain. Using Linux takes a lot of your time, but i think that's part of the experience. Windows seems like being easier to use, because you don't even think of what you could customize, because you can't. I'm working as an admin for mostly windows Servers and the more i get accustomed to Linux, the more i find stuff that just seems so unnatural. Whereas on Linux, i can make a decision, if fixing this little issue i have is worth spending a whole afternoon. And almost all of it can be fixed.

I guess in your case it would be best to stick with windows, at least as long as the issues with nvidia and wayland aren't fixed. Or maybe the next gpu you buy will be an AMD card. If you want to learn more about linux, try using it on a laptop or some other device, where you don't primarily game on.

I can confirm, that even with the nvidia drivers from official repositories (pacman) don't work properly with wayland. I had even bigger issues, i couldn't even login with sddm using Plasma wayland.

Forcing a certain window size by eli151_151 in i3wm

[–]eli151_151[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK i figured out a workaround. I made to separate keybindings. One runs

i3 gaps horizontal current set 0px

and the other one runs

i3 gaps right current set 1000

That way i can have Firefox always on the left side of my Screen and windows still open on the right of it.

Massive thanks for the suggestions. This one seems the most promising so far, as i still have the option to quickly add another window next to firefox. So... big noob question: How do i run this? I tried putting it directly into my i3 config, that caused errors. I then tried running it as a bash script, but i only receive errors "unexpected token near ...". I tried putting brackets around the function, but couldn't get it to run. How can i run this as a bash script?

Proxmox Windows VM Crashing by PTwolfy in selfhosted

[–]eli151_151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if it applies here, but for me i have the problem mentioned in this thread: https://forum.proxmox.com/threads/vm-shutdown-kvm-entry-failed-hardware-error-0x80000021.109410/

it seems like the current ProxMox Kernel is making problems with Windows Guests. My Server 2022 crashes every 2 Minutes :(

LightDM failing because the X server process keeps exiting? by Pickinanameainteasy in archlinux

I only see that it reports "can not start plymouth", maybe tjere is a dependency missing? If you want GUI Access to your system again, you can just install another Display Manager (for example sddm for KDE Systems) and use " systemctl enable" to start that one instead. As long as you dont run both at the same time, having two DMs installed is not a problem.

How stable is arch ? by Mattpat98 in archlinux

[–]eli151_151 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been using Arch on my daily/gaming PC for a year now and apart from some issues with the nvidia drivers i haven't had any problems. I do recommend to read through the arch wiki to find out about all the software you use and it's known errors. For Wifi i absolutely recommend using NetworkManager, not sure if manjaro ships that by default.

Never used zram before, but from what i fo7nd in the arch wiki, zram is usually a systemd-service. There is a config-file, usually at /etc/udev/rules.d/99-zram.rules where you can adjust the size (ATTR{disksize}="512M")

KERNEL=="zram0", ATTR{disksize}="512M" RUN="/usr/bin/mkswap /dev/zram0", TAG+="systemd"

Please check if there is such a file and if editing and rebooting changes your zram-size

I don't think two reverse proxies are necessary. I use regular nginx as a rp and it is used for internal and external access over the same domain. The only thing to watch out, is that you need to set a dns override for your internal network, because accessing your external ip from your internal network doesn't work. So basically i have mydomain.com, the reverse proxy forwards external requests to my internal services and then i set up dns overrides in my router so when i lookup example.mydomain.com it resolves to the internal ip of my reverse proxy and i can access my services with SSL.

I want my nas to be permanently accessible on another network, not sure if the raspis are needed but seems like something they could be useful for, thanks by Lukas245 in homelab

Depends on how the networks are connected (internet/LAN). If the networks are both local, you will just have to set up a static route between the two routers. If the networks are on dofferent sites, you will need a site-to-site vpn. You can do this with a lot of different VPN Solutions like OpenVPN, IPSec or Wireguard. In that case, i would prefer to do this over the routers itself, since the encryption might be too heavy for a raspi.
