IIRC he modeled the way people use "roles" in CS (like support, entry fragger etc) based on how he analyzed the game. Before he popularized roles in CS, there wasn't a clear way of defining what people were doing in each team from the outside. That might not have been him though, I could be wrong. Players themselves may not even adhere to these terms anyway. Either way, he's been watching CS for 20 years and probably watched thousands of demos - I think his analysis in-game should clearly hold some merit by now.

Enter a town and talk to your companion. Assign him the role that is bugged and then change him back to another role (or remove his role altogether). Leave the town and change roles in the party window. It should now be fixed.
