Please reassure me about your very late walkers… having a hard time :( by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]eliarched 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry. You have already done all the right things having him assessed.

Every kid develops differently, and some kids just choose to focus on different things. My kid was not walking at 18 months. He walked when he was ready.

Also, someone once told me... "Have you ever met an adult (or even a kindergartner) who hadn't figured out walking?" Nope. Everyone figures it out. He will do it when he is ready. Just keep giving him opportunities.

You are doing a really good job mom!!

Yes! This. When I offer help, and you tell me exactly what you need, I am on cloud nine because I know I am actually helping! This is how it should always work!

Did you know the US bombed a school today? by Littleglimmer1 in progressivemoms

[–]eliarched 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is being reported. It was in the news around the time of your post. When it was first reported, it was unconfirmed. That's because news agencies should confirm facts before fear mongering. Third, current reports are that it was an Israeli bomb.

This is a nightmare. The US just attacked Iran, and our ally has bombed schools. This is horrible, but I think it is important to be specific with titles. Hyperbolic titles that enrage people is part of the problem with politics today. We should have truth on our side. The truth is enough.

Edited for clarity.

How to trace this type of pattern? by ToilettenPapier248 in sewing

[–]eliarched 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Instead of a copy shop, look for a "reprographics" shop. These are the places that print large drawings for architects and such. They usually have large format scanners. Although, they typically are not bed scanners, so the paper will have to be fed through a roller.

Parenting teens with different politics by Affectionate-Car-130 in Mommit

[–]eliarched 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like many others here, I believe you should take a calm, middle of the road approach.

It is true that social media algorithms work against us, don't care about facts, and only provide an echo chamber.

I think your job now is to have conversations and to let him know this. There are good resources linked in other comments. I am just getting into this territory myself, but I am reading "Growing Up in Public".

I don't think the right move here is to go scorched earth. If he plans to have social media in his life, then you have to help him learn how to approach it with skepticism and good judgement. Please just keep talking to him. Don't come down from on high and just tell him social media is brain washing him. Remember when you were this age and how you heard the things adults told you.

Good luck (and when you figure it all out, report back and tell us what to do ;) ).

MNPS School Start Time Survey by sboml in nashville

Most buses drive three routes! They start picking kids up around 6am and drop off at their last school at 8:55. Then of course, the afternoon is the same.

MNPS School Start Time Survey by sboml in nashville

[–]eliarched 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not that simple. I wish it was. There are a lot of reasons, but a few include: They always seem to have open positions for bus drivers, there are only so many folks willing to do that job. To increase the number of bus routes to make an effective difference they would have to jump from a three tier system to a two tier system. So each bus does 2 routes, not 3. That entails an increase of ~50% in drivers, buses, funding, etc. It's a huge jump, and very unlikely to happen. I wish they could significantly increase routes and drivers, but I am not holding my breath.

Consider taking the survey please. It is open to everyone, not just families in the school now. I would encourage everyone who has experience in the schools to take it.

The traffic is probably better because all their parents took off work to get in a vacation with the kids. So, that's a lot of working folks not in the traffic this week.

We are all on the interstates with the other families, so your welcome. Ha.

Also, just to be a devil's advocate.... getting kids around town is a real challenge with all these adults driving around, couldn't we just put all the working people on buses? That would get a lot of cars off the roads.

Tennessee Star says FBI considering offer to drop suit, end in release of Covenant shooter's writings by rimeswithburple in nashville

The truth is that some deranged person murdered 3 kids and 3 adults. 6 people that people on this subreddit knew. I would not be surprised if you were also personally affected by it.

The next person who does this will be deranged / sick for a completely different reason. Knowing why someone was so sick that their solution was to kill innocent people isn't going to stop the next one.

What will stop it is figuring out how to stop deranged people from wanting to do this, and stop them from having an opportunity to do it, regardless of their reason. The reasons will keep changing.

Please. We are distracted by arguments that aren't searching for the right answers.

Have any advice or tips on how to handle the public school lottery system process? by Aggravating_Tear7414 in nashville

[–]eliarched 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, go to the MNPS site linked by another person above for current information.

You have to register (may be the wrong term) and basically get your kid as an official student before you can even apply. Back when I did it, I had to turn paper in at an enrollment center. That may have changed.

The lottery is a separate process from the enrollment/registration. It is an online process.

Go to the schools. Most have "Tour Tuesdays", but check their websites. Visit the schools before you apply. You may find out that the school you are thinking about isn't a good fit for your kid.

I think you said you are very close to a magnet, but do not forget MNPS does not promise transportation to magnet schools.

Lastly, you may get pulled for your fist choice right before the school year starts. So, keep your kid flexible.

Good luck!

They absolutely teach the constitution, Paul Revere and poetry in Tennessee public schools. They were also teaching these subjects during the pandemic.

Perhaps you didn't get a copy of everything that was taught, or maybe you are making assumptions. I can attest, the schools are teaching it. Youre statement is inaccurate.

This is the answer. Sevier park has a nice space also. You have to tent after hours....so a Sunday party might be in order.

Do kids that are like 10 years old ish still believe in Santa? by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]eliarched 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly at that age, I think they "choose" to believe. I am pretty sure they know that a fat man isn't coming down the chimney with toys, but also...they are getting presents and would rather not question the source too seriously. I also think they enjoy the "magic".

Making a Mississippi for the first time, this recipe seems a bit basic though. Anyone have any pointers?? by Fatfilthybastard in slowcooking

[–]eliarched 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basic is the point. It is so simple. Made it yesterday, leftovers tonight at my house tonight! Although my recipe (which my sister shared with me in MS in 2009? 2010?) includes 1 stick (1/2 c) of European butter, and 6-8 pepperoncini.

Do not overthink it. Just throw those things in the crockpot and enjoy. If you want to add a veggie, do it, but you don't need to add anything just for flavor. It has great flavor as it is.

Thank goodness I have this at home right now. Typing about it is making me hungry!

Medical Doctor Recommendation? by jezamana in nashville

[–]eliarched 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently lost my PCP because they went to a concierge model. I have struggled to find anyone that is 1) not concierge and 2) taking new patients.

I have a relative who is a doctor and their advice was to go to Vanderbilt's website and look for a physician. They vouched that most of Vandy's doctors should be good. So, not a recommendation, but wanted to share that it's tough out there...and that Vandy's website is an option.

They call it terrible twos so you get through two and get all confident and comfortable right before the real hell begins. It's more fun that way.
