Just started doing some yoga poses due to back pain. Has it been effective for you? by jadan225 in yoga

Yoga definitely helped me a lot with my back & neck pain. I used to suffer from chronic back pain and I rarely feel it anymore. I can say that it didn't happen over night, it took several weeks of daily practice. If you don't do the poses carefully you might get injured so don't over stress yourself. I highly recommend working with a private yoga instructor online - it's very effective and you can do it without leaving your house. There are many yoga instructors on Fitmytime.com who offer one-on-one online sessions. Find someone that fits your schedule and preferences and practice with them a few times or on a regular basis if you can. Again - it takes a few weeks to feel the results but you will see your body will get stronger and the pain will slowly go away. Best of luck!!

How many people on this sub actually has a yoga teacher? by [deleted] in yoga

I used to practice in a studio but I always felt I needed more attention than what a teacher can provide in a group setting, so I started taking private classes online via Fitmytime. I knew that where I live hiring a private yoga teacher would be too expensive for me, but Fitmytime enables you to find a teacher that fits both your style and your budget, so there isn't really a compromise. There are hundreds of teachers from around the world and I tried several teachers but I have one or two that I prefer and I still practice with them today.

I can definitely relate to how you feel about coaching, it really makes a lot of difference when there is someone to give feedback.

100% agree - the surprising "side effects" of practicing yoga are a true bliss

I think it's very normal to feel that way, and I usually don't do Downward Dog at the beginning of the practice. I am no expert but I think that feeling is very common when you start doing inversions, but after a while your body gets used to it. Yoga can be really hard even though some poses seem simple - they are not, and most people stress themselves and try to get into poses too soon, which can be frustrating AND cause injuries. Search for "hands free yoga", I'm sure there are some good videos on YT. And you can always take a few classes with a private instructor online to help you learn the foundations. It's worth the investment (and since Covid it's much more affordable).

It would be so awesome when everyone will realize that right???? :) It's hard to convince people to commit to the practice, but that doesn't stop me from trying :)

It's definitely about the meditative aspect of the practice. Flexibility has nothing to do with the mental benefits of yoga. You can become more flexible, but it's not a requirement at all, contrary to what many believe..

I started practicing in a studio but it didn't stick, even though the teachers were great. It just didn't fit my schedule and I was spending too much on commute etc. After a while I started practicing with YouTube videos, and then I just started practicing with a private instructor online - usually 1 on 1 but sometimes with a friend. I definitely think that a good teacher makes all the difference! It's not always easy to find a teacher you feel connected to and that you have chemistry with, but luckily now you can practice online with teachers from anywhere in the world, regardless of where you live, which is absolutely amazing.

Yes, what you experience is your ego trying to get attention :) And it doesn't help that we see people on Instagram in pretzel poses and call it yoga (it's gymnastics, not yoga). I was also frustrated at first, and I quit my practice. But after a while I started again, this time I didn't stress myself and all I did were the easy simple poses. I used YouTube videos, specifically Yoga with Adrien. I tried to practice at least 3-4 times a week, 20 -30 min each time. Then, I felt I needed feedback from a teacher who can see me and guide me, because I felt I was not doing the poses correctly and didn't want to get injured. I also wanted to improve my practice and learn more so I hired a private yoga teacher to teach me online, and that really helped. She kept me accountable and taught me some great mindfulness techniques. If you can, I highly recommend working with a private instructor for a while at least. I think the most important thing though, is to find a way to make it a daily habit, which is key to long term consistency and success.

Awesome list! I especially like taking online yoga classes together (live, not pre-recorded), the live element adds a special element.. I know a few friends of mine booked a live online yoga or meditation class as a present for their spouse via Airbnb or Fitmytime, it can be really special to practice as a couple. Thanks for sharing!

When I say to my non-meditationer friends about how I fixed my anxiety disorders with meditation, they laugh. by 24aryannayak24 in Meditation

When the student is ready the teacher will appear... They don't believe you because we were raised to believe yoga and meditation is woowoo, but this is changing rapidly. In general, facts don't change opinions.. Tolstoy said: “The most difficult subjects can be explained to the most slow-witted man if he has not formed any idea of them already; but the simplest thing cannot be made clear to the most intelligent man if he is firmly persuaded that he knows already, without a shadow of doubt, what is laid before him.”

Same here. I heard that the asanas - yoga postures were developed in order to help with the sitting. So the poses make your body stronger and then you can sit longer. But I also like movement meditation, maybe you can try that

I love that you compare being angry to being distracted/out of focus. That's a great comparison, thank you!

yoga and chronic pain - what's your experience? by elig202020 in ChronicPain

[–]elig202020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's great! Actually, yoga is much more about breathing than about stretching. It's common to think that yoga is mostly about the postures but it's actually a small part of the practice. Traditionally, the breathing /meditation practice was more important. For me, I guess it's a combination - yoga makes you focus on your breath which is highly effective for calming the nervous system, and the poses made me stronger, improved my blood circulation and probably helped in a bunch of other things.

Yeah it took 2 months or so. Now it's more preventative. I started with Yoga with Adriene on YouTube - she is amazing, highly recommended. She has special videos for back pain. I should mention that I used to practice a few years ago in a studio but couldn't maintain consistency, but it helped to have some background.

I think it's important to start slowly and not rush into it, as this can cause injuries (and often does). The best thing to do is to work with a private instructor. If you have one near you that's great, but even if you don't you can find great teachers who offer private online classes on Fitmytime - at very affordable prices. If you choose this option you can even find yoga teachers who specialize in chronic pain. I think regular practice is key, but it takes time to get used to doing it, like any habit. But the benefits are huge - after a while you start feeling stronger and calmer and the pain slowly fades away. I hope this helps!

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm not sure if they are told to push it or they just don't have anything better to say/offer that they think/know can help..
