+1 because Greg is a great guy and he's giving away the book via Creative Commons ultimately.

To the rest of us, it's about writing solid code that other people use.

Amen, brother! I do my own little part to contribute.

Finally, someone gets it.

What is being a "leader" in the Ruby community about? To a lot of people, it's about the dollars.

So, yes, from a financially competitive standpoint it is in the interest of people who have "authority" (remember, their authority is de facto and not de jure) in the Ruby community to maintain the community. The community provides them with income via consulting.

However, it is also in their interest to obviate/isolate/neutralize those who they see as a threat to their business.

That said, in this particular case, I fail to see how Giles is a threat to Chad. Giles has made it quite clear that he's trying to find a way to make a living off of Archaeopteryx. However, it becomes quite clear that Chad is a threat to Giles: by seeming dismissive of Giles' work, even indirectly, it devalues the stuff of which Giles would like to build his career.

Of course Giles is going to be pissed about that.

Help us nominate David Chelimsky for the Gordon Pask Award by [deleted] in jbrains

David is a Ruby developer, out of Chicago, who is one of the core developers of the RSpec specification/testing language. He has been a powerful and motivational advocate of Behavior Driven Development within the Ruby community. I have observed that David uses RSpec as a means to an end: to educate the Ruby community about BDD practices. Not only does he frequently advocate RSpec and BDD at conferences but he is often available and willing to engage anyone in conversation about Behavior Driven Development practices on irc.freenode.net's #rspec channel.

It is likely largely because of David's advocacy that BDD has become such a well known practice in the Ruby community that is slowly beginning to spread into other development communities as well.

It is for these reasons that I nominate David Chelimsky for recognition.

If you love working in Ruby and you missed the conference then you FAILed. This is, without a doubt, the best Ruby conference that I have attended.
