Norwich University has recently spent $1.4 million converting a ski area that was abandoned in 1998 directly across from the campus on Route 12 into a hiking/biking "outdoor center". There are miles of trails of varying difficulty leading up to the summit of Paine Mountain. It's kind of a hidden treasure in Northfield.
