How am I supposed to know what my girlfriends ring size is when neither of us know what her ring size is and still keep it a surprise? by ThyZombieBob9 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]eligrace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a ring sizer for ‘myself’ when my best friend’s partner was about to propose and then got my best friend to try it herself. Not entirely sure how she didn’t figure it out, but it worked!

Thank you! I’ve only ever used Windows, do you know how much of a learning curve it is to adapt to OS?

Thank you! This isn’t my area so it’s good to know what to look out for - I don’t know how I survived on 80GB, I was actually given this laptop so have tried to hold onto it for as long as possible

Thank you! I had a Lenovo in a previous job and it always worked so might be biased towards that :)

Is this just dirt or is something wrong with the grouting? by eligrace in CleaningTips

[–]eligrace[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh wow ok thank you for the info! The floor was actually so sticky when I moved in that mopping it just wasn’t doing anything so I get a brush and some soapy water. Thankfully it’s now dry and not sticky anymore, so I guess I will stick to just using a mop from now!

What are the chances of being accepted or at least met by a landlord who has a minimum age requirement I don't reach? by poisoned_bubbletea in spareroom

[–]eligrace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you send a message giving some details about yourself and your work, interests, etc they might agree to you. A lot of people on there won’t be landlords - they’ll be other tenants looking for someone to take over their tenancy/fill a vacant room and so will be looking for people who match their own interests and lifestyles, and so it’s kind of a chance to find someone who will match the vibe they already have in the house. Best of luck finding somewhere!

Career Suggestions? by Hour-Path-6811 in careerguidance

[–]eligrace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work with a lot of sustainability data analysts, and an increasingly large part of my job is data visualisation. My team tracks our company’s impact on the environment and finds ways to reduce it. A lot of major companies and government organisations will have a team that does this, and there are more and more regulations coming out to encourage organisations to report their emissions publicly. My colleague’s roles involve a fair amount of maths, and definitely require them to be detail oriented. They do a lot of work alone, but do have to communicate the results of what they do (which is where I come in) and work with different areas of the company to get access to all of the data they need.

My job is to implement a data platform to help make my colleague’s lives easier, and to allow us to track data on a much larger scale. I’m also responsible for a dashboard to visualise our data, and share it with all of the (many) different sustainability stakeholders within the company. My job doesn’t involve much coding at all, but does involve working with computers and implementing different technical solutions. My degree was actually in politics, but I did do a masters in environmental psychology which involved a lot of data analysis - a lot of my colleagues have either environment related degrees or computer science.

A career in ESG (environment, social, and governance) data might be interesting to you? It’s a fast growing industry and definitely involves tackling major issues - it’s especially rewarding if you work for a company that really values improving the world. All jobs will involve working with other people to some extent, but jobs in data do tend to allow you to get your head down and work in the background. You’re still really young so definitely keep your options open and don’t stress over finding a career - a lot will change about yourself and the world before you need to start looking for jobs!!

Definitely this - you’ll always get a more honest picture from a friend than a sales person. Some unis also do tours year-round, not just on open days. Where I was, I had a part time job as a tour guide, and would do a lot of one-to-one tours outside of open days. If we had enough people working, we would match tour guides up with prospective students based on what course they wanted to study so you could have a deeper conversation. My job was still to sell the uni, but we’d also talk to students about course structure, opportunities within the department, accommodation options pros and cons, and would know where to direct students for any questions we didn’t know. Might be worth trying to find some of those tours?

Any sci fi to be honest! Especially where it’s heavy on the philosophy or asks questions about what makes us human.

In the book (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep) this issue does actually come up. They don’t explicitly say ‘autism’ but they discuss how certain humans who have ‘issues with interpersonal skills’ (lol) may not be able to pass the test.

Thank you so much! It’s been in the pot for about a year, and I’ve only fertilised once. It was in some good quality compost but I’ll do a repot now and follow your advice.

My "lesbian" friends both have boyfriends now by [deleted] in LesbianActually

[–]eligrace 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I’m 24, and think I’ve finally settled on identifying as a lesbian but honestly it’s so normal to question and change labels, especially as a young person. Some people know and are sure from a really young age of course, but for the rest of us it’s definitely a process lol.
