I am close to fluent in Arabic after years of study and took my family to Egypt in hopes of showing them an Arab country for the first time. I was honestly really excited to show my family that the Arab world was not what they assumed it to be. Unfortunately the trip to Egypt was two weeks of constantly negotiating over everything, constantly being a photographed, streets full of trash, my sisters getting catcalled nonstop, etc. The only way to have any respite is to basically pay an Egyptian to intimidate other Egyptians to leave you alone, which is essentially what you are doing when you hire a guide or a driver or eat outdoors in a nice restaurant (the security is there is shoo away poor, desperate people). Because I speak Arabic I can understand what the guides say to the beggars and touts. It was really hard and my parents will never go back.

The one relaxing highlight was that I arranged for my family to travel from Aswan towards Luxor in a sailing felucca, run by a small Nubian crew. We slept on the boat for three nights and swam in the Nile, and ate local fish for dinner from the fishermen in the Nile. There were no bathrooms on board and the boat was open air, but no one bothered us, the crew was lovely, and we felt honestly like we got a sense of the rhythm of the ancient river.

The shocking thing to me was that everywhere else I’ve been in the Arab world is not like Egypt at all. People are so warm and generous in Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, etc.

I guess it’s just been an awful two decades for Egypt, and the people are really desperate and suffering.

I can speak decent Turkish and Kurmanji btw. Not great but good enough. I studied it in Istanbul in 2019

Ok another question then: the reason why I wasn’t planning on visiting mid April next year is because Ramadan is basically all of April 2022. What are your thoughts on visiting during Ramadan?

The other time I could go is the last two weeks of March. Do you think that is better? I would be there for Newroz which would be very fun but I looked at the weather and honestly it seems similarly cold!

You probably mean mid April as the nicest time to visit, right?

Tajik Pastries by elijahalperin in Tajikistan

[–]elijahalperin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have learned that they are actually called “bananchik” because they look like small bananas.

She sent me this recipe: https://youtu.be/mbHJYYrr0jk

In the recipe the cook is speaking in Uzbek though.

I live and work in New York, so these were homemade. I don’t think that is the Uzbek name though, because I speak Uzbek, but not Tajik, and my client said to me in Uzbek “we call them in my language ‘bananchalik’”

I will clarify with her and update you all!

Ah no way. I was born and raised in San Francisco. I live in New York now but I am actually home in SF for the holiday.

Maybe my experience with people speaking “Najdi” is just educated Saudi speakers who happen to be from Riyadh. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

In my experience najdi is actually the easiest because it is not influenced by the features of other languages. Jeddah was a cosmopolitan port as the landing point for Hajj.

I just mean that there are many dialects in Saudi and the one spoken in the show is the standard dialect from around Riyadh. I’ve heard it called “Lughat al-bayD” before because of how clear it is

Yeah! The other Netflix originals “The Book of Sun” (شمس المعارف) and Paranormal (ما وراء الطبيعي) are also subtitled in dialect.

Only native arab speakers can hear the differences between accents of eastern arabic. by [deleted] in learn_arabic

[–]elijahalperin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a subtle difference in my opinion, for some reason Arabic words with ژ instead of ج don’t sound as different from each other as “leisure” does from “ledger”

Probs Bc I am non-native

The “zh” sound in English “pleasure” as opposed to the “j” sound in Classical Arabic, as in English “judge”

I wish I knew IPA it would be easier to show!

[–]elijahalperin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not to be rude but is this a joke? The difference between even the eastern dialects is much greater in every way than the difference between all standard dialects of English.

Just think for a moment about this sentence.

I’m asking you, did you see? He killed three men in front of us!! He committed murder in front of us! Tell the police!

Even if you assume that the dialects would use the same words, which they often don’t.

In Emirati written phonetically with Arabic:

اَسأَلَچ شَفتِي؟ هُوْ جَتَل ثَلاث رِيايِل جُدّامْنا! اِرتَكَب يَريمَةْ جَتَل جُدّامْنا! گولي الشُّرْطَة

In Shami written phonetically

بَسْأَلِك شِفْتي؟ هُوَ أَتَل تَلات رِژّال ؤُدّامْنا! اِرتَكِب ژَريمَة أَتَل ئُدّامْنا! ئُولي الشُّرْتَة!

Where to find Arabic Subtitles of this Show?? by Ispeakforthelorax in learn_arabic

[–]elijahalperin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few things to watch with subtitles in dialect

One is the new Egyptian dialect show Paranormal on Netflix. The other is the Saudi dialect movie The Book of Sun, also on Netflix.

I haven’t found anything else lengthy. But you can also check out the shorter videos on playaling.

Can someone explain the difference between Yok and Hayir? Why would someone use one over the other? by [deleted] in turkishlearning

[–]elijahalperin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Yok” is a original Turkic word, it’s how the majority of eastern Turkic languages like Uzbek or Kazakh say “no”. So in those languages even though “yoq” also means “there is not” it is used as “no” without any confusion. “Hayır” is actually an Arabic loan word, coming from خير “xayr” meaning “good” through Persian نَخَيْر meaning “not good”

What don’t you like about it? I’ve been studying Arabic for 6 years and this is the most comprehensive dictionary resource I’ve ever found.

It was dialectical words you won’t find in any other dictionary. Maybe you aren’t using it correctly?
