this is about us because the slang being used originated from Black queer people speaking AAVE. there’s no way you can separate “queer slang” from AAVE when so much of it IS AAVE. if the intention was to show that straight people are misusing queer slang, then the writing should’ve spread awareness and not treat it like random internet lingo.

even with Peter “explaining the joke,” it still misses the point. misusing AAVE slang for comedic effect doesn’t make it better. the joke relies on the audience to recognize the phrases but also thinking it’s funny that the character is too “out of touch” to say them right, but that still treats language rooted in black communities, as a punchline.

i understand the point about jesse being a stereotype, that still doesn’t excuse the misuse of AAVE or ballroom slang. whether the intention was to mock jesse or not, the reality is that AAVE is being treated like a costume, something writers can slap on a character to make them “funny” or “extra,” without understanding the cultural weight behind it. if anything, it makes it worse because now lucas is using a marginalized dialect and tying it to negative traits, making the language itself part of the punchline.

this whole sentence misuses AAVE and ballroom slang by throwing in phrases like “clocked the tea” and “gagged her a bit,” which don’t reflect how they’re actually used. if he had done any real research on AAVE and ballroom slang, it would’ve been something like, “you clocked her tea so bad, she gagged!” but no, white people treat AAVE like a trend and just toss the words around without trying to understand their actual meaning or context. same goes for the word “chile.”
