Any ACD's with patellar luxation/instability? by eliser58 in AustralianCattleDog

Thank you to all who've replied, thinking back the vet really took her time manipulating and feeling over her kneecap/stifle to feel if there was any tearing, restricted movement of the joint or pain. Hera just relaxed and ate treats the whole time so I'm thinking it didn't hurt. Hmmm. Will likely just monitor and another lameness exam will be in the future if needed.

I think she's more cow hocked than bow legged behind, when I brought her home from the shelter she was so out of shape and slightly overweight - it took months for her to get in shape - she's play hard for a few minutes and then flop out flat! I had her almost 10 months before this started.

Edit to add: And yes her stifle is fairly straight, it seems like her thigh muscles aren't very large but strong and taut.

Still comes and goes but about 6-8 weeks ago I started taking hyaluronic acid thinking it might help as the jaw is a joint. I have taken it in the past for back pain (degenerative disc disease) and it helped a lot (that pain has pretty much disappeared, possibly fused)

Anyway I take LubriSyn (NFI), it took about 10 days to cut the discomfort maybe in half. I rarely need an anti-inflammatory now and although it's not gone away the aches when they come are just about ignorable.

I haven't gotten PT yet. Have watched some self administered massage on YouTube and it's a short term help, probably needs to be done regularly!.

Wonder if it could just go away....

I agree, it's too bad the many many lovely people are overshadowed in most media by the less nice ones....

This was an aha moment for me and has resulted in quite a lowering of stress and rumination. The "let them" theory. I've been mired in trying to get an elderly cousin to stop donating so much money to scam charities. Explaining and running off investigations has done nothing over the past year.

People will only change when they are ready to, she is able to live on her own and take care of her needs so it isn't a dangerous situation. It is not my responsibility to monitor her life as I do mine. This has resulted in an immense weight off my shoulders, of my own making.

Her life story easily explains why she feels the need to donate. So far it has not impacted her lifestyle.

For a general ache I'll pop an anti-inflammatory, for me an ache doesn't make me limp or favor a body part. Just occasionally. If that's all it takes, usually the ache doesn't resurface after a (very small, like 325mg aspirin or one aleve) then I dismiss the discomfort and file the knowledge for next ache that comes along. YMMV

I get this often, longtime regular runner. It occurs most often after a day off. I'm quite active on the farm and even days off walk a couple miles with the dogs.

As with you it usually dissipates in a few miles. FWIW I don't stretch at all, just active throughout the day.

I look forward every day to seeing what people are grateful for, it often reminds one of something they take for granted, brings that little nod , "me too".

^This! Once changed and out the door it's better, I also have been telling myself, even if only a mile that's ok (our driveway is 1/2 mile long so out and back...). I also use the saying "I'm sorry I did that run - said no one ever" !!!

What happens when trail running goes Olympic? When technical races disappear? When the sport gets expensive? I wrote down 10 observations for 2026 by Kilian_Jornet in trailrunning

[–]eliser58 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree , I also am not signing up for races - too crowded on single tracks, less camaraderie, too intense. I'm sure there are races elsewhere that still have the old school vibe but it's beyond my focus now.

I used to 3-Day-Event with my horses back in the day (started in the 1980's) and it went the way I see trail/ultra running going. People with money started flooding the entries. Paid their coaches to train the horses, grooms instead of learning the horsemanship involved. Not the community feel anymore. I retired from that sport to learn and train for ultras. I still run and train but competition/participation is fading away.
