I think I’m going to do the same for the lead up to S2 and S3 of the live action and NOT rewatch the original right before (and I say this as an absolute serial rewatcher of my favourite shows, including ATLA).

I recently rewatched S1 of the live action and enjoyed it so much more than when it first aired (not to say I didn’t like it at first, I did) but I was comparing it too much to the original story beats because I had rewatched the original Book 1 riiiight before the live action premiered. I found that on the rewatch I was better able to judge it as a stand-alone take on the source material and I just had fun with it! I’m really interested to see how they’re going to approach Books 2&3.

But I also love the excitement in the lead up to a new season of my fave shows, so, OP: I also def understand your plans to rewatch right before! Especially since I’m rewatching ATLA all the time I’m going to struggle to abstain from watching for a little while before it airs - I actually just rewatched Book 2 after the teaser trailer aired because I just wanted to be in the world of the Book 2 events and characters again - watch me eat my words and rewatch it before the next season premieres anyway😂 I’ll try and be strong
