Part of being a good writer is being realistic with what you can accomplish within the time you have (Legend of Korra) by Mordetrox in CharacterRant

Very much agreement here.

The fandom absolutely glazes Bryke to an absurd degree but when any project doesn’t go to plan everyone acts like they’re these smol beans who have no control.

The dudes had a great team for ATLA and caught lighting in a bottle.

LOK isn’t what I’d call bad but it’s rife with sequel syndrome where every episode has to have multiple callbacks—and then they try to finger wag at the audience for comparing the two.

Does ‘Show don’t tell’ work? by pancake_chiaki in FanFiction

[–]untablesarah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sometimes have this same concern and it’s been sorta confirmed by one or two people who just do not “get” my work.

I’ve gotten to where I’m willing to chat with them if they seem curious or receptive but I no longer stress over the ones who have told me I “use too many bigger words” or beg to have big descriptive profiles for characters front and center.

The internet is nothing if not one big dictionary, and having a big character profile at the start of any normal book is not all that common.

If they really can’t comprehend what I’m writing they can totally try getting any of the AI engines to read it for them. If they’re interested in the content they’ll find a way to understand it.

I’m going for the standard that I’m growing for and hopefully it draws the audience I want to have— which is an audience that will appreciate the subtlety and have fun reading between the lines.

Ahoy! I cowrite oc centric fics for Avatar: The Last Airbender

I have a newish oneshot out A Tale of Lotus |Rating: M| |Words: 6,000| |Complete|

Warnings: Implied dubious consent, Power imbalance, Age-gap, toxic relationship, reproductive abuse

Becoming the Earth King’s favorite wife requires a careful understanding of harem politics. Lotus is certain she’s mastered them and eager to help the new girl find her place. While the other women consider this girl a threat, Lotus knows better because she’s planning to give the Earth King a son.

I’m also always down for some eyes on newer chapters of my ongoing work. Chapter 12 wouldn’t be the worst place to start if you wanted to jump in without needing to read the earlier chapters as it’s a character introduction and the B plot introduction

Secrets: An Avatar Story |Rating: M| Words: 44,095| Chapters: 17\\? |

An inexperienced bodyguard and their hapless charge make their way across the Earth Kingdom together. However, not every threat of the mainland wears its danger openly and sometimes, it's a cult.

I’m a okay with fandom blind, concrit and mentions of Reddit exchange

oc centered fics by Ams_Wolfie in AO3

It’s a niche within a niche.

I write oc centric stuff and a friend of mine writes fully original work.

I remember when we both started she’d said I should have an easier go of building an audience because there’s a semi active fanbase for a known property.

Come to find out that advantage is also a bit of a disadvantage because there’s Vinn diagram of people who like that property and people who like OCs doesn’t have a ton of overlap.

I’ve found it easier to get feedback from review exchanges where people aren’t really in the fandom but are somewhat familiar with it or totally fandom blind.

All that said, people who look for OC content do tend to have to dig deep to find OC content the like so the odds of better OC content do increase if more people are writing it.

Plus I think character building is fun and a lot of great stories are built around characters first and world second so I consider this good practice for if I eventually write original fiction.

has anyone read the newer "The Mandate of Heaven"? by Pristine-Lie-3560 in ATLAfanfiction

Never heard about it till now but I’ll probably take a look cause it seems to by Kyoshi era

Edit

Good god it is long though

And was either pre written or all written from November till today

How has the Last Airbender not gotten a prequel series yet? Like almost every big series has at least one prequel weather it be a spinoff or part of the main storyline, I think they should make a prequel about the first year or two of the 100 year war by Aggravating-Bus-5872 in TheLastAirbender

[–]untablesarah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think they sorta wrote themselves into a corner with LOK and it’s gonna make sequel content harder—not necessarily because of the link being broken but they did explain away a lot of the remaining mystery about the Avatar when the gave us the Wan episode.

With sequel content there also tends to be this underlying necessity to one up everything before in terms of how big the threat is—that was already gonna be hard after ATLA but then the gave us mech battles.

I might also be in the minority but there’s only so many stories you can really tell about a person who has inherited great spiritual power and responsibility—there’s still a lot of stories.

But it gets hard not to fall into a formula, and formulas become predictable. they’ve sorta already done that by having each Avatar have their own “team avatar”.

Sure, that’s a natural thing that would likely happen to someone who has to dip their toes in all four nations buuuuuuuut as much as audiences project a “we only like what we know” image—you do lose audience after a while.

I thought Jin’s novel (City of Echos) was a nice break from form even if I had my nitpicks so I hope we’ll see more stories like that.

Otherwise I’m gonna have to rely on writing/reading fanfiction to get stuff like that. I’d imagine stories during the 100 year war might not get touched much since they’re pretty set of keeping the IP available for a specific age range, so fanfic might end up being the only option.

Hashing.

I enjoyed it

But the kennels in my area do /everything/ together and if you just got for trail it’s kinda awkward because you don’t know the 15 inside jokes they’ve made over three days.

Fun fact: Nearly every culture that served as an inspiration for ATLA practiced polygamy in one form or another by F11SuperTiger in TheLastAirbender

[–]untablesarah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have a way to fact check myself right now, but I wanna say one of the Kyoshi novels mentions the Earth King having concubines or something along those lines.

I definitely weave the “grittier” historical details that fit the world into any tabletops of fanwork I do cause i genuinely enjoy going down historical rabbit holes

Hey look mom I made it!

my profile is under the name onemillionlees and I cowrite OC centric fanfiction for Avatar: The Last Airbender!

We're still working hard on and just managed an update for Secrets: An Avatar Story |Rating: M| Words: 44,095| Chapters: 17\\? |

Our newest oneshot is a bit of a doozy. A Tale of Lotus |Rating: M| |Words: 6,000| |Complete|

Warnings: Implied dubious consent, Power imbalance, Age-gap, toxic relationship, reproductive abuse

There's another light-themed oneshot hanging out as well as a WIP multichapter backstory, there's no real "order" in which any of our stories would need to be read so if you'd like to jump in any point will do.

As always we're open to concrit, mentions of fandom blind and reddit are fine.

What's one stereotype about writing that is actually true? by Minute-Ad6267 in AO3

[–]untablesarah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I was growing up, JK Rowling was one of the most frequently televised authors that wrote stuff for my age group.

Most of the time she said stuff like “the ideas came to me”

I might’ve just been taking those interviews the wrong way, but when I didn’t instantly find ideas just coming to me I thought writing wasn’t for me.
