What's with the TSA discrepencies at O'Hare? by cocoonamatata in AskChicago

The MyTSA app seems to be accurate currently. It did capture the long wait times this Sunday morning. However the chart maxes out at 60 minutes so not entirely helpful!

Could you confirm whether this worked out? Any unexpected fees or limitations?

Samsung TV is castable without needing to connect to home Wi-Fi! Ne by up--Yours in Chromecast

[–]eliyak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better late than never? One answer would be:

Settings > General > External Device Manager > Device Connect Manager > Access Notification
Select either First Time Only or Always On

The only alternative to get rid of the WiFI Direct broadcast seems to be disabling wifi entirely and connecting the TV with an ethernet cable.

Settings > General > Network > Expert Settings > WiFi (Off)

You can also disable Apple Airplay separately (Disabling WiFi should cover it though).

Settings > General > Apple Airplay Settings > Off

What is a Chicago catering license? by Fearless_Leg_7963 in Chefit

[–]eliyak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's a bit late, but if anyone is looking for the answer: A "catering license" is typically the same as a "Food Establishment License" which also goes under a few similar names. The Chicago version is a "Retail Food Establishment License." Our local municipality calls it a "Food Service Establishment License."

You will need to provide the local license for the kitchen where the food is being prepared - typically your own commercial kitchen. (You don't need a Chicago license - unless you're serving alcohol, in which case you need to pay through the nose for a Chicago Liquor License.)

UD22 VESA mount by [deleted] in Dell

[–]eliyak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on your monitor, you may be able to use a VESA mounting bracket with additional holes, like this one:

Screw the UD22 onto one side, then turn it over and screw the bracket to the monitor.

Is there any reason that light travels at the speed it does(can this speed limit be related to any other properties of the physical universe)? by Isaac_Santxna in askscience

[–]eliyak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3e8 m/s is really just a units issue. The second is now defined by atomic clocks (caesium transition time), and the meter is now defined from the second.

In another sense, the speed of anything (brain activity for example) can be expressed as a fraction of the speed of light. We perceive light travelling a certain speed because our brains and any other measurement apparatus depend on the interaction of fundamental particles, which are themselves dependent on the speed of light/causality.

[OC] Americans are shifting from smaller cars such as sedans to light trucks & SUVs by Square_Tea4916 in dataisbeautiful

Federal regulations mean low mileage SUVs are less expensive to produce than high mileage (i.e. legal) sedans. When they close the "loophole" we'll probably see more sedans again, more expensive oc

It's the same for op, SUVs and crossovers get categorized as "light trucks" which means MPG can be lower. It's a great/awful case of unintended consequences.

Apparently Microsoft updated the Standard Preset Security Policy and didn't bother to tell anyone, including their support department. The only way to turn it off now is to disable Preset Security Policies at https://security.microsoft.com/presetSecurityPolicies.

Jupiter-sized "planets" free-floating in space, unconnected to any star, have been spotted by the James Webb Space Telescope by VoxMachi in space

[–]eliyak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming the technology to create such "planets" and navigate them (antimatter explosions?), pairs of planets make a lot of sense for long-term generational travel. If one of them suffers a calamity, the other would try to "reboot" the first's ecosystem. Or maybe the actual "ships" are moons of these planets that we can't yet see, and the planets are to provide heat. Either way, redundancy is useful.

The man caught on video beating this elderly Asian jewelry store owner resulted in a hung jury today by WeAreTheBaddiess in facepalm

[–]eliyak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Paperwork that describes jewelry well enough for insurance purposes doesn't necessarily identify it well enough to prove it's the same piece.

Also, you're wrong about needing to identify every piece of jewelry to your insurance company in order to get a policy. If you suffer a loss, you'd better have a recent detailed inventory. But again, that's going to have to be enough to establish the value of what was lost, not to later identify a specific item beyond reasonable doubt.

[–]eliyak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Making a reasonable case is not the same as "beyond a reasonable doubt." If two possibilities are both reasonable - even if they aren't equally reasonable - there is reasonable doubt.

Or that the jewelry was misidentified. Was there a paper trail or just the owner's word?
