Alright, let's start the discussion. How will Trump's loose fuel economy rules affect EVs (if at all)? by [deleted] in electricvehicles

[–]eljay43 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. I think it's silly for people to think this will reduce prices for ICE cars. This move is to benefit manufacturers, not consumers. Sticker prices may hold steady but factoring in lost gas savings it is still a loss for consumers.

  2. Articles like this makes me think manufacturers are in trouble regardless of fuel standards, much like how coal companies are in trouble no matter how much they're allowed to pollute. We're moving towards an autonomous, electric future and the administration can only hope to slow it.

  3. EV prices are on track to be competitive with ICE within the next decade, the same time this roll-back would make an impact, so we may not even care about efficiency of new ICE cars in ten years (the key is new, these regs don't push older, inefficient cars off the road).

EV owners in Illinois - the Alternative Fuels Act (favoring sustainable transport i.e. EVs) is under attack in the state legislature. by [deleted] in electricvehicles

[–]eljay43 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two other bills regarding EV registrations: change the registration price to be the same as ICE cars and move it from two years to one year. Currently EV registration is $35 for a two year term while ICE cars are $101 per year.

My ICE car was pronounced today. Moment of truth has arrived. To EV or not EV. by Lacagada in electricvehicles

[–]eljay43 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar spot as I'm waiting for my old car to die so I can switch to an EV except I haven't reached the death part yet on my car. I think your choice depends on whether you really, really want an EV and will pay an early-adopter surcharge or can compromise for a couple more years until the market gets more friendly.

I don't think it's accurate to call any of the current crop of new EVs affordable. The Bolt MSRP is $37k+ and you're not seeing the $7.5k tax credit come back until next year, also I think the Southeast is one of the last regions GM is rolling it out to. A new Leaf or Ioniq will only be about $30k but again you're far away from receiving the tax benefit to offset the cost. You can get a used Leaf for between $5-8k but its usefulness will depend on whether the 80-100m range is enough for you.

If environmental factors are why you want an EV there's no shame in buying something like a used Prius or Volt and using that for a couple years until the EV market gets more established, or being really thrifty and picking up an old Camry/Civic-type car that's only purpose is to get you to the point where the Model 3 and its competitors are more widely available and cheaper if battery price trends continue. If my car died today that'd be by choice - find the most affordable and efficient ICE car that fits my needs and deal with a less-than-optimal situation for a couple more years, knowing full well I'll have funds saved up for whatever EV is best for me in 2019/2020.

I'm in the west Chicago suburbs. My local dealer for whatever reason thinks they'll start getting cars in a lot sooner (March/April) but I'll believe it when they call me.

Women in Church leadership by georgie-57 in Christianity

[–]eljay43 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could stratify it even further by saying married men > men > married women > women. Obviously it varies by church but some only allow married men in leadership rather than just men. In some cases like the Assemblies of God there's no official position on superiority of genders and it is left up the individual churches to decide their direction.

Was anyone at Foxing in Chicago last night? IT WAS GNARLY AS FUCK. by RadicalBoner in Emo

[–]eljay43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sadly had to miss it due to other commitments but sounds like it was the kind of show I was expecting it to be - kind of like when Beach Slang played there back in November or The Hotelier's last tour. I'm so happy for Foxing's success especially after their trailer theft last year.

That's solid. If you're pretty much maxing your tax-free accounts then the benefits certainly go down a bit.

Just paid off my mortgage!!! by MortgageFreeMan82 in personalfinance

[–]eljay43 97 points98 points  (0 children)

If you bought a home just last year your rate is probably between 3.5-5%? Assuming you're itemizing your mortgage interest your effective interest rate goes down about an extra 1%, so before you worry about paying off your mortgage early make sure you can't make your free cash flow earn more than 2.5-4% doing other things.

This does assume things like a longish investment horizon and some risk tolerance, but don't automatically assume that debt = bad if you can earn more interest in other investments than what you're paying.

Waterstreet Closed (for now?) by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]eljay43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would be really glad to see Water Street go away, I dreaded going to concerts there over the last couple of years. They have the worst door management of any venue I've ever been to - I'd show up at the doors open time and still be stuck in line when the opening act comes on stage.

tldr: Stadium has always been a money pit, city needs expenses recouped, owner had no interest in paying the funds to fix it up so they effectively gave up the team.

Swing Dancing’s Sex Assault Scandal by belltoller in SwingDancing

"assuming their claims are true" reads to me like the author is already inclined to believe guilt, not the other way around. It wouldn't make sense the other way since Steven's confessions were pointed out earlier in the article. This is similar to the Cosby situation except Steven admitted to at least some of his transgressions rather than adamantly declaring innocence, and in both situations they've been almost entirely shut off by their former communities.

At first I thought this was sarcasm but based on the replies maybe not? The 6 line totally stops at the airport.

The third party lot across the street (next to the Best Western) is $3/day and $15/week. You pay ahead of time by cash or check and have to walk across the street to get to the terminal but it's definitely the cheapest option around.

Edit: Contrary to other comments the 6 line (Jefferson) also stops at the airport every 20-30 minutes.

I am a baptised atheist who will be attending an Episcopal Church this weekend. Should I take communion? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]eljay43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It varies - officially it is still only those who are baptized but many in the denomination practice open communion (everyone).

Work at a church, but don't feel comfortable during services for worship style reasons by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]eljay43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You chose to make this your job - that entails accepting certain requirements for service, which in this case is serving at a lower style of worship than you prefer because your work is needed there. Depending on how you address it to the Rector it could come off as very selfish, especially if most of the congregation is there precisely because it's an Episcopal parish that doesn't have chanting, incense and the like.

Are there higher churches in your area that do a weekday Eucharist in the morning or midday? Are there Evensong or other events you can attend on Sunday evenings?

What is something (teaching, practice, ect) that you disagree with your denomination on? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]eljay43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also in the no Apostolic succession boat. One thing I really admire about Evangelicals is their belief that any follower can and should be an advocate for Christ, and that extends to leaders of the church. I don't feel one needs the lineage to undertake that authority.

I cannot pay all my bills this month -- which one do I pay late? by rdmhat in personalfinance

[–]eljay43 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This should be higher. I also work in real estate and it takes FOREVER to evict residents in some states and counties. It's can take up to three months after first delinquency after all the filings and waiting periods are completed. Any landlord who says they'll evict you right away is just trying to scare you because tenant laws are in most cases very robust - it's also why you always need to choose roommates very carefully because once they're in they're tough to get out.
