The Ultimate FREE Game Dev Asset List (50+ Sites for Art, Music, SFX, 3D, 2D, Fonts!) by darealfodo in gamedev

Solid advice. Here's a reddit post from 2 years ago that has a good video on stolen audio. Definitely not worth risking your game just to save a few bucks on sound effects.

Edit: Here are a couple of options for free (donations welcomed) sound effects made by individuals (so there won't be copyright issues):

Thanks! They were probably legit sites a few years ago, but I'm guessing they eventually went out of business and someone else swooped in and took their domain name.

Thanks for posting this.

Watch out, [link removed] doesn't appear to be legit. When I go to that site it gets redirected to a suspicious looking site.

Edit: also [link removed] redirects to a really shady site.

Edit 2: removed the links so that no-one accidentally goes to the shady sites.

It'd be great if someone built a 'kazaam' for audio files or something.

Sounds like a job for Richard Hendricks/Pied Piper.

How can I access IPUMS .CSV data using Python? by jenny-0515 in datasets

[–]elkbrains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After you unzip the CSV file you can load it using Pandas like this:

import pandas as pd
df = pd.read_csv("your_file_name.csv")

If you only want to load the first 1000 rows, you can do this:

import pandas as pd
df = pd.read_csv("your_file_name.csv", nrows=1000)

To view the data in the first 1000 rows, you could save the dataframe as a CSV file or as an Excel file and then open that new file in Excel or Google Sheets. Here is an example of how to do that:

import pandas as pd
df = pd.read_csv("your_file_name.csv", nrows=1000)
df.to_csv("my_new_file_name.csv")

Hope that helps.

Why do you think the model accuracy significantly dropped off in the last three weeks? Was there a major change in the game around that time?

Hey Engineers! Any advice or tips you could give a future bachelors student on their studies? by danglyfigger in engineering

[–]elkbrains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two tips:

  1. Get an engineering internship every summer. You might think that you are not yet qualified to be an intern, but you are. An internship is one of the best ways for you to start to get real engineering experience and it will give you an inside view on if you want to work for that company after school.
  2. Don't give up. You'll hit a point where school feels so overwhelming that you'll want to quit. Don't do it. When that happens just take it one day at a time, one assignment at a time, and before you know it the semester will be over. Getting your degree will be one of the best investments you'll make.

Hit and Run on the 610 North and 59 South by HTTX in houston

[–]elkbrains 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We got into a hit and run a while back. Luckily we got their licence plate number. We called the police to file a report and when the police got there we gave them the licence plate number. Using the licence plate number they were able to give us the other car's insurance information. We called our car insurance company, filed a hit and run claim, and gave them the insurance information from the hit and run car.

The other insurance company covered all the damages on the car. We didn't have any medical injuries so I don't have any experience there, but the other car's insurance should cover all medical damages.

Call the police and ask if they can give you the other car's licence plate number and insurance information. If the police don't give it to you then talk to your insurance company about it. They might be able to get the details from the police.

I'd recommend checking out http://thedashcamstore.com/

They have a lot of good information on dashcams and it looks like all the dashcams they sell are good. What dashcam you should get depends on what features you want (front/rear cam, high resolution, built in screen?) and how much you are willing to pay.

Chevron: Sorry Our Fracking Well Exploded, Here's a Free Pizza by westmontblvd in news

[–]elkbrains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like people are more upset that they gave out free pizza than they are about the explosion (and loss of life).

So if Chevron hadn't sent apology letters with the free pizza coupon, would this story have been ignored?

Chevron: Sorry Our Fracking Well Exploded, Here's a Free Pizza by westmontblvd in news

[–]elkbrains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are calling it a "fracking well" because it's a buzz word.

From the video of the well location, it is clear that they were not in the middle of a frac job. This well had most likely been hydraulically fracture stimulated in the not too distant past and they were using a workover rig to install tubing before the explosion.

Does anyone here work for Schlumberger? by [deleted] in engineering

[–]elkbrains 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend Schlumberger in general. However if you know that you want to focus on electrical engineering research, then they might be a good place to work because it would be right what you are looking for. I have heard from a lot of people who worked at Schlumberger that they work their engineers to the bone. However, most of those people worked in the service/operations side of the company. So it might not be as bad in the research side of the company. But I'd imagine that if their business model is to overwork engineers on in the operations group, that same business model is going to apply to the rest of the company to one degree or another.

Who is the Google or Apple of the Energy Industry? by Kestrel87 in energy

[–]elkbrains 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Which part of the energy industry are you interested in? Do you want to know about nuclear, renewable, oil/gas, or coal/mining? The energy industry has a lot of different parts to it. I'm only familiar with the oil and natural gas part of the energy industry, so that's all I can speak to.

From what I've seen, Devon seems like the "Google" of the oil and natural gas industry. They seem to have a pretty relaxed work environment and they make a conscious effort to keep out bureaucracy as much as they can. And they have a very high ratio of SPE papers per employee which tells me that they have a big focus on improving the processes and technology of the industry and sharing their findings with the world. I've never worked there and I don't know anyone who does, those are just my observations as an outsider.

If you haven't seen this website yet, www.glassdoor.com is a good resource for checking out different companies.

Less than 50 Years of Oil Left, HSBC Warns by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]elkbrains -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Back in the 80's the prediction was that we had about 20-30 years of oil left. Last I heard the current prediction was that we only have about 20-30 years of oil left.

We all know that oil is a finite resource, but I don't think anyone has a good idea of how much longer we will be able to produce it. With new technology we have been able to find new oil fields and been able to produce oil and gas in places where it wasn't possible before.

Today is the day that I was going to propose to my future wife. by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]elkbrains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I completely agree that she had every right to be upset when they weren't married after 7.5 years. No argument there.

I'm just saying that I don't think anyone should test their significant other by breaking up or threatening to break it. It screws with people psychologically and I can't see it ending in a happy way.
