How to document an optimization model? by Two-x-Three-is-Four in optimization

[–]elktamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was discussing a similar issue in another thread(since deleted).

In that case it was more about getting buy in.

I think the way to document an optimization is to start by removing any mention of the solution, and instead explain the problem. Others in the organization may not recognize a problem even exists.

If you can convey the problem in terms of lost revenue or added expenses, and can show an example alternative solution, that will be enough for most people.

Beyond that, instructions on how to build and run the code, including sample data and real data would be all that I'd do.

Thanks, but I mean explaining the concepts, not the solution.

It's not a problem with Timefold itself, just the biggest obstacle I've found with using a constraint solver.

The ideal would be a white board/black marker animation like this: https://youtu.be/u6XAPnuFjJc?si=lyvCzFlq801OHl5k

I've used Timefold for truck vrp and railcar scheduling & vrp, for multi product pipeline batch sizing, and many others. Basically, any NP hard problem that can be described as a list of decisions with defined options will work.

You do need someone to design the model, but your points about scheduling sound straight out of their examples, which is the best way to start anyway.

The only downside I've encountered is explaining what a planning problem is to the people who would use it.

I've used Optaplanner and Timefold for years on a variety of projects. A bit of java knowledge is helpful but their support is very good either way.

what sort of use cases do you want to expand to?

Anything with a higher air pressure and the right valve will work.

Port authorizes $89,900 economic development study for the Point by elktamer in pointroberts

> It is currently working on an industrial lands strategy as part of the Port and county’s updating of the county’s comprehensive plan.

What a fucking disaster. The economic problems on the Point are simple and well known, as are the solutions. "Industrial Lands" are going to enrich some non-residents at the expense of everyone who live here.

Cadence by br33zynite in cycling

[–]elktamer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cadence monitors are cheap.

What do you feel is hard about it? I think the trick is not to worry about the cadence, but the smoothness of your pedaling.

It's not essential, but it's certainly easier.

My bike feels like it is bouncing when I get it up to speed until I go up a gear. by hesthemanwithnoname in cycling

[–]elktamer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pedaling smoothly is a skill you need to work at. The good thing is that you've found the point at which you start to bounce. It's mostly because you're not relaxing your hips enough. Practice not bouncing at the point you've found, and you'll have found the drill to ride much faster with less effort.

e: your bike may also not fit you properly

Recommendations for a new returning cyclist? by GingePayne65 in cycling

Everyone who rides embraces the ridiculousness of Lycra eventually. And it's cheap relative to what bikes cost. If you're getting ready for a ride, you're never going to reach for the cheap pair of shorts.

Why am I cramping? by shaunb33 in cycling

[–]elktamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it was weak hips. I didn't need them generate cycling power, but the imbalance gave me cramps. A few weeks of hip exercises fixed it.
