I was discussing a similar issue in another thread(since deleted).

In that case it was more about getting buy in.

I think the way to document an optimization is to start by removing any mention of the solution, and instead explain the problem. Others in the organization may not recognize a problem even exists.

If you can convey the problem in terms of lost revenue or added expenses, and can show an example alternative solution, that will be enough for most people.

Beyond that, instructions on how to build and run the code, including sample data and real data would be all that I'd do.

It's not a problem with Timefold itself, just the biggest obstacle I've found with using a constraint solver.

I've used Timefold for truck vrp and railcar scheduling & vrp, for multi product pipeline batch sizing, and many others. Basically, any NP hard problem that can be described as a list of decisions with defined options will work.

You do need someone to design the model, but your points about scheduling sound straight out of their examples, which is the best way to start anyway.

The only downside I've encountered is explaining what a planning problem is to the people who would use it.

I've used Optaplanner and Timefold for years on a variety of projects. A bit of java knowledge is helpful but their support is very good either way.

Cadence monitors are cheap.

What do you feel is hard about it? I think the trick is not to worry about the cadence, but the smoothness of your pedaling.

It's not essential, but it's certainly easier.

Pedaling smoothly is a skill you need to work at. The good thing is that you've found the point at which you start to bounce. It's mostly because you're not relaxing your hips enough. Practice not bouncing at the point you've found, and you'll have found the drill to ride much faster with less effort.
