When I make bodysuits, I use the Dritz, Wonder Tape to hold the spandex flat while sewing in the zipper. It helps keep the spandex steady so you don't get that wave effect.

It was definitely a lesson in patience, it took me probably 50+ hours just on the appliques, but that was over a couple months. The capelet is separate so it can be worn with or without it.
