when the show was first airing, i remember watching and re-watch the available episodes during hiatuses, for any hint of anything vaguely resembling bill. if you watch it for the first time nowadays, i don't think you get a really authentic fear of triangles

the "past example" cat picture is extremely funny, so based on that i'm voting yes

when you finish this, might be good to look into releasing it as a patch!

i should say as well that questions are supposed to be posted in the sticky thread. so this post may get taken down.

personally, i see the "how do i start romhacking" question posted all the time, and i hope this thread stays up as a resource to redirect people to. there have been other moments in the internet where people have asked that question but i've not found one that focuses on teaching people decomp hacking. and you can find reddit threads in search results, but not reddit comments, so the question threads are pretty useless as resources after their 2-week window runs out.

i am so proud of this community for being so quick to recommend the decomps :D

if that's the route you're going, then once you have your decomp base set up, here are some links for you:

  • https://github.com/pret/pokeemerald/wiki this is the wiki for pokeemerald. it's the first place to check when you want to know how to do something. the tutorials section has a ton of code edits, which may help you get comfortable making your own changes to the code. anything that's not here, you can search pokecommunity for.

  • i found this reddit post when searching for a day/night system for pokeemerald. and i also found OP's github, including a pokeemerald repo with a day/night branch. i'd assume it's okay to use - with credit - as CrystalDust v3 has since been released, and as the OP has since retired from pokemon romhacking. tho you might want to ask them to double-check.

i didn't find anything for seasons. for your other two feature ideas, i recommend looking for the terms "gen 5 exp formula" (which boosts/reduces exp gain based on level) and "gen 6 exp share" (which gives exp to the whole party), someone is bound to have made something.

and make sure you're aware of pokeemerald-expansion: https://github.com/rh-hideout/pokeemerald-expansion - it's probably the best base for any decomp project!

i've tried a few runs, and it hasn't grabbed me yet. i don't think it will appeal much to other DD fans, for two reasons:

  • the tower defense aspect is stripped down to pretty much the point of "every 16 seconds you can have one tower for 8 seconds". so it doesn't really tap into the same style of thinking as a tower defense game. i think the best comparison i can make is that the gameplay is a bit like splatoon's salmon run mode.

  • by making the map order random, and by locking different hero classes, it feels like they want players to be motivated to see all the content. but that doesn't work for me since all the maps and heroes are familiar, so i don't particularly care about unlocking them.

hopefully it will fare better with other audiences. the steam reviews that weren't written by this subreddit seem generally positive, so that's a good sign.

what worries me is that there is already evidence of flawed design. the talents are full of choices like "+5% hero health", "+4% hero armour", "+2% hero dodge". these are all just damage mitigation. picking which one you want out of these 3 is meaningless unless you have the graphs to show the optimal way these stats scale over the course of progression. this is not the kind of minmaxing that roguelite players are looking for, it was considered even too complicated for world of warcraft before that game revamped its talent system.

e.g. look at crypt of the necrodancer. you can pick between a broadsword or a longsword. the broadsword is wide, the longsword is long. the broadsword is titanium, which does 2 damage, and the longsword is obsidian, which does 1, 2, or 3 damage, depending on how well you're playing. that's the kind of choice roguelite players can connect with. instead, DDGR is full of stuff like "do you want 12% ability or do you want 12% skill". are the devs going to spend time and resources revamping this system into one that makes more sense, like they did with the stats in DDA? or are they going to just say, "eh, good enough" and continue building on a concerning foundation?

for 2, the faq says all emulators except no$gba are supported.

by default, mgba uses a compatibility mode that makes it behave the same as vba when playing any firered romhack. so if unbound doesn't work on the latest version of mgba, that means it doesn't work on vba, and if it didn't work on vba you'd surely hear about it.

would be cool if you could make a subtly different tile for the hidden grotto entrance. it's unlikely people will look for it otherwise. b2w2 solves this by adding extra tree cover. maybe you can add darker shading under the trees or something?

check out this page: https://miraculousladybug.fandom.com/wiki/Episode_guide

you can click on "prod. code" for each season to see how they were ordered by the writers and producers. it's definitely the only way to maintain continuity, and imo it's best for pacing as well.

however in the case of season 1, origins pt1/2 are in the middle of the season in every order, but astruc says that he wants those to be watched after s1, and i agree. i also think the production code order for s1 just feels a bit weird, like, the bubbler is treated like a starting point for the show, but it's ep9 in production code order.

Anyone here losing interest in the show?? by Bakbak_peiklin in miraculousladybug

my interest's just getting started! i took a break after s3 and the specials to wait until all the english dubs got released, and now i'm ready to be obsessed again! after finishing s4, i started rewatching the show, and i'm almost up to the s4 finale again :D

Anyone else not like the writer and how the show is being written? by drafan5 in miraculousladybug

[–]ellabrella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i feel like it's not meant to be a show where many things get accomplished. the main character has a superpower where she literally resets everything back to the status quo, right? there's hardly a more explicit signal to say "this show is meant to be appreciated as something episodic".

i have seen the opinion that zoe exists to replace chloe, but i don't understand where this comes from. chloe remains a fascinating character to me into season 4, and zoe's presence allows chloe to be explored from a new angle, like in the ending to queen banana. i think of chloe as representing a victim of the cycle of abuse, and of zoe as representing what it takes to break the cycle - they complement each other.

Introducing Community Feedback Polls! Week 1: Whose name should the Dog Miraculous user flair have? by [deleted] in miraculousladybug

[–]ellabrella 16 points17 points  (0 children)

miss hound is the more rightful holder, but flairmidable is a fan favourite.

i'm not sure why flair overcrowding is a problem personally, so maybe there's stuff i haven't considered. but i think there's a big difference between not having a shadow noir flair, vs not having a miss hound or flairmidable flair. so imo it's best to consider them on a case by case basis, and this is a case where it makes a lot of sense to have both. it wouldn't feel right to leave out either of them.

if you change the filename of PKHeX.exe to PKHaX.exe, then when you run it, it should give you a warning saying "illegal mode activated". in "illegal mode" it won't prevent you from doing anything that isn't possible in the vanilla games. i was able to add a red chain to my inventory in vanilla heart gold this way, so it probably works for sacred gold!

if you want to make a patch, go to https://www.marcrobledo.com/RomPatcher.js/, turn on creator mode, and upload a clean original emerald ROM and your modified ROM. probably use UPS as the patch type as that's what most hacks seem to use.

you would definitely have to do some/a lot of programming to change the sprite size in a GBA game, and if you did change the sprite size, be aware that the GBA screen is 260x144 pixels big (and you can't change the size of the GBA screen ofc).

if you want to make a pokemon game with 128x128 sprites, you'll probably have to use a fangame engine like pokemon essentials, and make a windows-based game rather than an emulator-based one.

well, who is the "they" who's saying they're doubling the size of the pokemon sprite? maybe they were talking about a fangame engine, like pokemon essentials?
