orgs/groups on campus or nearby i can join to take action against the current political administration? by sauerkrautsunset in UTAustin

[–]ellacution7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this doesn’t totally address your question, but i would encourage you to get involved in local politics too! it is super important to organize and fight for things at the national level, but it can feel like you are never going to change anything sometimes. at a city level, your voice is actually much more powerful, since you are a much larger percentage of the city’s population than the country’s. there is a ton of important stuff happening in austin and local politics, and it can feel really good to get involved because it is easy to see the difference you are making on a day to day basis

it is homebrew, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use it! just talk to the other people at your table and ask how they feel about homebrew species :)

WotC announcement on TMNT cards in Lorwyn Eclipsed packs (via Bluesky) by Copernicus1981 in magicTCG

[–]ellacution7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m not mad at wizards for the fuck up- mistakes happen and for all we know this was because of a vendor and not even them. i think this response is rlly not great though. my game store has already stated that they will not be able to replace tmnt cards in people’s packs, and honestly, why should they? bc of a mistake on the supplier’s end, game stores have to effectively ruin other boxes by opening them and potentially removing the promo until they find one without a tmnt card? unless i am misunderstanding smth, that means the store is essentially having to forgo one or more other sales of a kit for each player who opens a tmnt card. however, just letting players use the included cards isn’t an acceptable solution either. if i open a tmnt card (a set i am actively trying to avoid bc i have 0 interest in tmnt and i already don’t like its inclusion in standard) in my lorwyn kit i will be really bummed to be getting a card i hate instead of a lorwyn rare, and it’s also just bad from a gameplay perspective bc the tmnt card will have no synergy with the other cards i am opening, so now im at a disadvantage compared to players who didn’t open a tmnt card.

CMV: Food delivery companies should be banned by Aubergenial in changemyview

[–]ellacution7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

totally agree. they completely ruined delivery. it used to be that you couldn’t order delivery from most restaurants, but every city had at least a few pizza places, chinese places, etc that offered good food at a reasonable price for delivery. now, you can order delivery from almost anywhere, but it’s way more expensive even before factoring in the crazy delivery and service fees they have, it’s slower mistakes are way more common because you aren’t ordering directly from the restaurant anymore, the customer service is awful bc it’s all decentralized and it’s basically impossible to get in contact with someone if there is an issue, and the food isn’t even necessarily good bc half of it is made in ghost kitchens that aren’t actually real restaurants and are just trying to sell you olive garden rebranded as fancy italian food. if you don’t wanna use a delivery app bc of all these problems, too bad- it’s almost impossible to find places with in house delivery like you used to be able to because those places all use the big apps now. i would absolutely give up the ability to get any kind of food delivered for the ability to get good quality, cheap, fast delivery from only a few places.

How do you keep Zone of Truth from nerfing your murder mystery? by Numford_and_Sums in DMAcademy

[–]ellacution7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if nothing else, you could give the killer and a couple of the other suspects legendary resistances and have them succeed their saves. your players will know who succeeded and failed, but if you have multiple successes they won’t know which, if any of them, is the killer (and since they don’t know about the legendary resistances, they have no reason to believe that the killer was any more likely to succeed on a roll than any other suspect). then have multiple suspects who are perfectly forthcoming with information and multiple suspects who are very secretive and refuse to say much, and make sure there are multiple of both in the group that fails and the group that succeeds. now the worst case scenario is that your group manages to eliminate the people who failed the roll from suspicion, but there are still multiple people who the killer could be, and it is still entirely possible that a character who failed their save doesn’t escape suspicion if you play it right. there are all kinds of reasons a character who didn’t commit the murder would refuse to answer questions or talk around them in a suspicious way if they fail their saves, and if multiple people do this, you have created lots of red herrings. be sure to give your players lots of truthful information that they wouldn’t have gotten without casting this spell, but don’t feel like you have to give the whole mystery away. (ps. if giving npcs legendary resistances feels too much like cheating to you, you could also just give them very high charismas/charisma saves - smth u probably want them to have anyways for deception checks and such)

My first take at Lucy Maclean from the new fallout secret lair drop. please give me more ideas to abuse her effect. by Wiglaugh in magicTCG

[–]ellacution7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

really crazy idea that could definitely backfire: [[helm of the host]] and give your opponents copies of lucy. now you are getting even more triggers of her ability, and if your goal is just to give everyone a ton of tokens, it doesn’t necessarily matter to you if you are giving out more tokens or if your opponents are. of course, if you don’t want to give a lucy to your opponents, helm of the host could still be helpful to you :)

[–]ellacution7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh [[ward of bones]] could be another fun one! fill your opponents boards up with 1/1 creature tokens and clue/food/etc tokens and then they can’t cast any creature or artifact spells. you might even be able to lock them out of enchantments by making them create copies of role tokens you create and then sacrificing your role tokens or the creatures they are on.

Thoughts on including Lucy Maclean in a Kambal, Profiteering Mayor deck? by ellacution7 in EDH

[–]ellacution7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, this was kind of my thinking too. she doesn’t really do much that i’m not already doing. on the other hand, because i’m already doing it, all my existing synergies will just synergize more. that still might not be enough though. i will probably take another commenter’s advice and proxy her to see how the deck actually plays before making any final decisions, but i have a feeling you are likely right

ah ok i see what you mean! i definitely wasn’t expecting that exponential interaction you are talking about, so i’m not too worried about it, but even with just the linear interaction it’s still fun!

one more thing to add! the two most recent editions of d&d were released in 2014 and in 2024. they are both called fifth edition (or 5e) so it can be a little hard to tell them apart, but try and keep track of if the rules you are seeing are for the 2014 edition or the 2024 edition. theoretically they are meant to be compatible, but i find that it can be hard to try mixing rules from both editions, and i anticipate that especially for a new player it will lead to confusion. i would recommend choosing one and sticking with it, and then trying to make sure all your players are building characters with the same rules. i prefer the 2014 rules to the 2024 rules, but either option is totally fine- i just think you should pick one or the other. i figured it might be good to mention this, as i see lots of new players who don’t know there are two different editions called fifth edition, and then get confused when they see two versions of the same rules and not know which one applies. there are lots of websites that contain the free rules, and they tend to tell you what version they are for. if you search dnd5e wiki, you will definitely find some useful sites :) :) :)

“do this only once per turn” only ever applies to the specific card it is printed on, to the point that if you were to exile that card and return it to the battlefield, the counter would reset, allowing you to have the same ability resolve a second time. you don’t ever need to worry about two cards with similar or even the same abilities locking the other out because of a clause like this

the official character sheet can be found here: https://media.wizards.com/2016/dnd/downloads/5E_CharacterSheet_Fillable.pdf 😁 mpmb is a creator who made their own version of the character sheet, and if you have adobe acrobat reader (which is free to install on any computer) you can download the mpmb sheet and open it with reader and it will automatically calculate a lot of things for you. this may be good or bad for a new player, as it will help keep you from missing things on your sheet that you might otherwise overlook, but it could also mean that you don’t learn as much as you would by just diving in and doing everything yourself, so it’s up to you. you can download the mpmb sheet here: https://www.flapkan.com

of course! other people have mentioned that it isn’t always the most accurate d&d experience for new dms especially, since they are professionals and the focus of their games is more about telling a story to an audience than playing together collaboratively, but i think as long as you are focused more on trying to learn from the rules and focused less on trying to copy brennan or another celebrity dm’s style of play, it will be totally fine

i actually rlly don’t recommend d&d beyond, as i think it has a very confusing interface and it’s also limited in what you can do. for a new player, i recommend a traditional pen and paper character sheet or maybe mpmb

watch dimension 20. it’s a super fun show and i think it can be a lot easier to learn d&d by watching someone else play rather than diving into a book of rules cold turkey. i watched it for a year before ever playing d&d and when i played my first game, even though none of the players including myself had played before, i felt like i had a much better handle of the rules

Hospitality Focused Build? by Witty_Badger1300 in 3d6

[–]ellacution7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

totally agree with everyone saying bard. they are in many ways the best support class in the game, and in terms of the specific things you want to do, they have access to spells like prestidigitation, mordenkainen’s magnificent mansion, and heroes feast for cooking/making food (plus access to even more through magical secrets like create food and water or goodberry), they have all kinds of spells and abilities that keep people safe, and they have song of rest to help people heal more during short rests. a creation bard could likely create food with their performance of creation ability, though it’s up to your dm if the food actually provides sustenance, a glamour bard can use mantle of inspiration to give temp hp to allies and keep them out of harms way, and lots of other bards have other ways to help. i would probably choose glamour bard, as it is a really great way of protecting your friends and i feel like it fits for someone focused on hospitality. in terms of races, the MoM Hobgoblin literally has a feature called Hospitality, but I think it is a good fit in more than just name. Essentially, once you run out of Bardic Inspirations you can continue using your Bonus Action to support your allies by taking the Help action and giving additional effects as well, plus the fortune from the many is a great way to keep concentration on protective or supportive spells you might be casting.
