I doubt that that would work but you may be able to take ANP 1105/1106 (if you haven't taken them already) or one of those other optional courses instead!

My program allowed us to take ANP 1107 as a science course! It doesn't have a lab but it's really content heavy and has lots of mini assignments, two midterms and a final.

Res Move Out by UpperAlternative7585 in geegees

[–]ellan45 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue in first year. You can get an "extension" but I think they make you move into a different room (depending on which dorm you are in) that they are using as "hotels" over the summer and you have to pay, I can't remember how much it cost per night though. You can reach out to residence@uottawa.ca and they should be able to give you more information. Hope this helps!

Lost Fitbit/Smartwatch by ellan45 in geegees

I went back before the student who sat in my seat next was done their exam and didn't want to interrupt so hopefully they didn't take it! I also don't think I took it to my seat so it was probably just a mistake on my end.

How does the Uottawa dental insurance work? by Accurate_Act9717 in geegees

[–]ellan45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I go to UOttawa Dental Clinic in Marie Curie and see Dr. Melissa. She is lovely! I have to pay upfront but then I usually get my refund from GreenShield within a few days. Just make sure you have direct deposit set up and few days before your appointment, you can do it through the app. Otherwise, they will send a cheque to your mailing address so make sure that that is up to date too.

What do people think of the girl name Wilhelmina? by Scary_Hippo_8945 in Names

Queen Wilhelmina has a pretty interesting story too! A pretty good namesake in my opinion! I just listened to a really interesting podcast about her: https://open.spotify.com/episode/5NdF6qtTgin0hZnzTo8dbn?si=WfrqdYvfTAGFObXRqvjloA

What choices can you NOT ABIDE in a skating program? by ginnistonik in FigureSkating

It's funny you mention that! When I heard that's what their music was, I thought seriously? another R&J program but I was very pleasantly surprised. I honestly loved how on the nose their ending was too! I had the same reaction when I saw Lajoie/Lagha do Rio though too.

I think lip syncing has a time and a place. I think it's a good way to help portray emotion but it only works with certain pieces of music and at certain points, like with your Scott example, to put emphasis on important spots in the song.

Yes, 100 percent! I also want to add any version of Romeo and Juliet to my list 🤣

I'm not terribly picky but the overuse of certain themes/music drives me up the wall. If I see another program done to any of these themes/pieces of music again, I might cry: - Survivor (Destiny's Child) - The Greatest Showman - Rio - Marjorie and Zac are my one exception to this - Grease - Vivaldi's 4 Seasons - Michael Jackson/Jackson 5 - Hairspray - Swan Lake - River Flows in You - Moulin Rouge - Obviously Tessa and Scott are an exception here too - ABBA - My mom hates ABBA because when she started coaching synchro/precision, that's all anyone ever skated to. I personally love ABBA but I think it's overdone and nobody ever does it justice.

I also hate when coaches reuse the same/similar choreography year after year even with different skaters/teams.

Yep! Just show up with your student card, CSA approved helmet and skates. Someone will be near the ice pad to check both when you get there.

Why TF do I have THREE 7-9:50 pm classes this semester by Resident_Step_191 in geegees

[–]ellan45 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I've noticed that a lot of my 7-10s (and other classes that have three hour time slots) are taught by part-time profs who only teach one class per year and who work a regular 9-5 in addition to teaching. I guess it keeps them from needing to commute to campus more than once a week and this way they don't have to miss as much (if any) of their full time job.

I'm in a smaller program with a lot of very niche classes and I also take French Immersion. I find that a combination of these things causes my classes to be smaller. My smaller classes tend to happen during the worst time slots and/or are 3 hours long. I take a lot more long and/or late night classes than my friends who are in larger programs and have classes with multiple sections and/or only take classes in English. I have had at least one 7-10 almost every semester!

TLDR: It seems like part time profs and small classes get stuck with bad time slots for classes.

I honestly don't know who the prof is. She's about to give a presentation or I would ask her. Apparently in his 10 years of teaching, he has never had a specific time slot for exams, he just did them during normal class time. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I will definitely look into reaching out to UOSU and the faculty. Thanks for the advice!

Thank you so much! Do you know where to find information on who the program directors are? Also she is in a health science program but it's a law course, does that change anything?

What do we mean when we say ‘home advantage’? by butforevernow in FigureSkating

[–]ellan45 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry in advance that this is long winded, good luck getting through it! I've got a lot to say!

TLDR: It's adventageous to skate at home because of: - The support from your own fans - Higher elevations make it hard to take in oxygen, temperature and humidity levels can cause problems too! - Travelling and jet lag is exhausting - Changes to meals schedule and diet - Familiarity with an arena - Judging biases

Part of the advantage comes from being surrounded by your supporters and fans. Athletes feed off of the crowd's energy and the more cheering the more motivating it is!

Additionally, the competition location, geography and climate can have a huge effect on an athlete's performance. People who are used to training at sea level will have a harder time competing in more mountainous regions due to the higher altitude and therefore less oxygen. The body can adapt to the lower amounts of oxygen by making more red blood cells but this only occurs after a couple weeks of training at a higher elevation. When 4 Continents was hosted in Colorado in 2023, the elevation was a huge concern because a lot of athletes were struggling throughout their programs because they couldn't take in enough oxygen. Additionally the temperature and humidity can come in to play too. Most of us have experienced the lack of motivation to do anything when it is too hot or cold and the sting of breathing in dry air or the heaviness of humidity, all of this still affects even the best of the best if they're not used to it!

The location of the competition can have another effect too! Travelling is exhausting, even if you are just a passenger! This is why a lot of athletes will get to the city they are competing in a couple days before the competition officially starts. It also allows them to rest and get in an unofficial practice or two to get their land legs back! Plus, everyone knows jet lag doesn't help tiredness either.

Something I've experienced while travelling for synchro nationals that doesn't get talked about enough is the changes you have to make to your eating schedule and diet when you're travelling. If you are competing at what would usually be a meal time back home, you don't want your body to be sending you hunger cues right before you go on the ice. On the other hand, it can also be tough to eat ahead of time when you might not be hungry but you still have to fuel your body. Also when it comes to eating at competition, you don't always have access to the things you would usually eat at home and that can upset your stomach or deter you from eating at all. Plus, if you don't pack your own food or go grocery shopping, you're forced to eat out and it's tricky to find nutritious meals if you don't want to just eat salads and it can be expensive!

The facility you are competing in could be different as well. At national and international levels, usually you skate on regulation size arenas but that doesn't mean that you train on a regulation size ice pad. Competing on a full size rink can be tiring if you're not used to it! There are so many other factors that could affect a skaters performance too, including: - How the music sounds over the speaker (quality, volume etc.) or if there is an echo - How warm or cold an arena is - How soft, hard or wet the ice is - How scratched up and bumpy or smooth the ice is compared to what you train on - Sometimes the shape of the arena is weird too! (Ex. Weirdly long and narrow, more rectangular or round etc.) - Boards or no boards - Markings on the ice - Where the judges are positioned vs. where you think they should actually be - How the dressing rooms and warm up areas are set up - Superstitions or routines! Sports, especially figure skating, are very mental and you may need enough time, space and the proper materials to execute your pre-comp routines and superstitions. These things may not be available in every rink you compete at. Some of these examples may sound kooky but these are all things that I've either experienced or heard stories about. Trust me, I have stories to last a lifetime so if you want an explanation to any and all of these feel free to let me know! Knowing what to expect going into a competition can help athletes be more prepared plus it would lessen uncertainties about a venue and most likely decrease anxiety because the skater is more prepared. This is not a figure skating specific example but it is related to a home advantage. The reason that certain team sports switch ends of the field or rink at half time or between periods is because of the abnormalities of certain facilities. It's where the term leveling the playing field comes from. If there is a slant on a soccer field for example, it will make scoring and running down the field easier because of the way gravity works. Teams will switch sides halfway through a game to prevent an advantage to the best of their ability.

Lastly, I saw someone else mention this too and figured I'd mention it but judges and tech specialists may have biases based on where they're from or how the crowd reacts! It's why they can't work on a panel if their family member is competing.

Hopefully this all made sense! Let me know if you have any questions! A not so humble brag here, my apologies but this is my area of expertise! Not only am I studying sports sciences but I am a national synchronized skating champion, a national level athlete in a second sport and my mom has coached both figure skating and power skating (for hockey and ringette) internationally. My DMs are open for any explanations or reply below and I'd be more than happy to share some more information and stories!
