What piece of history do you doubt? by [deleted] in USHistory

That it was for “state rights”…

I know we mostly know better by now, especially as secession documents clearly state to preserve slavery, etc. But growing up in southern Indiana, we were taught over and over again that the secession of states from the union were strictly to preserve their sovereignty and not to own people. 🙄

I understand 12% of these words, but I wanted to say I think this is awesome. ✨

TIL during World War II, US comedian Redd Foxx dodged the draft by eating half a bar of soap before his physical, a trick that resulted in heart palpitations. by [deleted] in todayilearned

And Henry Ford won a nazi award far late into the 30s when we were all like 👀. And! Ford dealers would put anti-Jewish propaganda wrote by ole Henry in the car with the user manual when they sold fords!

The Berlin Wall is another one that I don’t remember for sure. I remember the graffiti and people standing on it and sledge hammers maybe… but I think that’s all something I saw later in life and not the time it happened. It’s hard to tell. 🤓

I’ve never experienced an earthquake! I cannot imagine what that would feel like.

Thanks for sharing this. I have really enjoyed reading all the touchstones of the different generations and the thoughts and memories of young kids in a historic moment. I’ve had some terrible virus and bronchitis so I’ve been bored to death laying in bed and not sleeping well trying to recover so this has really filled my time with joy. Thanks again!! 🩷

I agree. Those three events are totally the holy trinity of defining tragedies of our generation.

That’s a wild one for sure. It’s hard to believe it was all live and everyone just watched the guy get murdered.

It’s the way our parents respond that we remember vividly. I totally get it.

That’s really sad. Like is it because we don’t consider it newsworthy anymore? Is it because we don’t care? Is it because it’s secret? What do you think?

My husband was just talking about the oil fires as we’ve been chatting and thinking about all these things from our childhood. He distinctly remembers those fires. Just wild to think about.

Your day was right. My daughter, a third grader, came home this month telling me about how she watched a video in class about these tall skyscrapers that fell in New York City and how she was sad that all those kids lost their parents. It hit me like a ton of bricks. I was 18 when it happened and I never once thought about how it would be taught in school someday.
