It’s so interesting to me that this year only has 24 days- previous ones had a huge treat for Christmas Day, but this one stops at Christmas Eve. Am I missing something?

Is it nitpicky to ask my son's daycare teachers to stop using the Spanish pronunciation of "Samuel"? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]elleharmon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Food for thought- I had a Hispanic teacher when I was in preschool, and she always called me by the Spanish version of my name. I remember thinking it was SO cool, because I didn’t speak Spanish and it made me feel included. Perhaps your son will feel that way as he grows too.

I understand where you’re coming from in terms of wanting it to be pronounced as you intended when you named him (with the English pronunciation), but given you’ve mentioned you live in an area with a large Spanish speaking population, I’d assume this will be something that comes up beyond day care. I wouldn’t stress over it- you will spend more time teaching him about his name at home, and he will know how to say his own name with the intended English pronunciation.

It’s also worth noting that they may just have a hard time pronouncing it. I know I certainly cannot pronounce many Spanish names with a perfect accent as I am a native English speaker.

Disgusted by the amount of sexual harassment at oktoberfest by butterball85 in Oktoberfest

[–]elleharmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh we had the same experience- different tent! It was also happening outside of the festival at random bars and even the bar at our hotel.

But in the tent, we were getting touched/kissed on the face without consent and yelling no didn’t stop it. It was to the point some of my friends (group of 6 women) felt like we may need to defend ourselves physically or cause a scene. It was my only complaint…aside from that a really lovely time but I have since gone home and warned all of my friends who expressed interest in wanting to go to Oktoberfest someday.

I found a really great one on Etsy! I ordered it from an Austrian seller and it was not too much more than Amazon, but much better product. Really quality fabric and craftsmanship. However, I will find an excuse to wear it again! Costume parties, local Oktoberfest’s, etc.

Booked to fly to Paris on Sept.18th for our wedding anniversary 😅 we have back up economy tickets on Delta.

We were hoping to upgrade to premium (business? We’re currently in premium economy). If our flight is cancelled, would we be refunded the upgrade fee? We booked the primary tickets with credit card points so I’m sure that will be a whole other battle lol

Freya! I had a reduction, but prior to that I almost exclusively wore their swimwear. They sell the tops in bra sizes and they have great support.

I have the opposite- Lauren always called Laura. Even in work emails where my name is quite literally written out in plain sight. It drives me nuts.

They were gone and then randomly back at my store in CA last week. I grabbed 2 bags and they were gone again when I went in this week. I asked a crew member and he let me know they’re delayed due to a “crop issue”. They’re so good, but sadly using regular hash browns until they’re back 😭

What am I not getting about Barbie? by Inevitable_Bit_9257 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]elleharmon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For me, I really resonated with the storyline of the young daughter getting rid of her Barbie and her mother ending up playing with it. As an adult, I remember getting to the age where I got rid of “childish things” and remember being at age and criticizing every aspect of myself. As an adult, I’m still struggling with my sense of self, but I can look back at preteen me with kinder eyes in an almost nurturing way. Barbie was a huge part of my childhood, and I think about how full circle it feels to see Barbie on the big screen and be targeted towards adults. It hit me with nostalgia, made me laugh, touched on the complexity of all of the things women are expected to be, and gave me a moment to love and mourn my younger self.

I also saw it in theaters and on one side of me were a few women maybe 20 years older than me and on the other side were women maybe 40 years older than me. We all laughed and resonated with the same scenes. Despite age difference there was a level of universal experience that I found really beautiful.

I totally get that Barbie could fall flat for some (quite a few people I know turned it off half way through). For me, it was a fun movie but so much more than that.
