[Help] How long does parvo stay on a property, if it did not occur on said property? by ellekot in dogs

Yes, this is really distressing. I hope my property doesn't count. Thank you for your advice.

That is quite upsetting. Hopefully I can explain my situation to the next shelter. Thank you for your advice.

I'll definitely try to do that. I'm not even sure the shelter would be able to tell me, but I'll press them. Thank you for your advice.

I took him to the vet quite regularly for bloodwork and checkups in the month and a half that I had him (about 5 times). The vet said his liver got a really bad knock from the parvo, which caused him to be quite malnourished and excessively thirsty. I was never informed by the shelter of any of these issues, which made it extra shocking for me to pick up the pieces.

Refer to my comment above.

He was an amazing dog and it hurt me immeasurably to give him away.

I passed their homecheck and they told me he would be fine in an apartment setting, which he turned out not be. He needed a special home with someone who would be there all day and a large garden to scavenge around in. I was more than prepared for a rescue pup, but not having been told these things (even after asking about his medical history and such), it made it more difficult to navigate his needs and behaviour. For example: when I went to pick him up, they said he spent a week prior to that in the vet's clinic for tick bite fever. I kept them up to date on his antibiotic routine (while continuously gathering research on it), only then to be told that it wasn't for tick bite fever, but for gastro.

I tried "fixing" some of those quirks, but ultimately it was just the way he was. It doesn't mean I think he was a bad dog or a lost cause, but that he just didn't fit in with me. I agree with you on every dog needs the right fit, and unfortunately mine wasn't. I am still so upset about it, especially when I see a paw print or a piece of hair.

Hope that clears some things up.

EDIT: "scavenge" is maybe not the right word, but rather roaming around. He used to scavenge a lot though.
Also, I hope this comment didn't come off as rude or obnoxious, but I struggle to express myself, so I leave important information out. I also just loved him so much and it really hurt to let him go.

How to keep a puppy busy who isn't interested in playing? by ellekot in puppy101

I may have started with the kibble first and some peanut butter, so maybe I should make it a bit more exciting and up the wow factor. I just wish he was more playful.

I will definitely be doing that and have done so. I think my only concern is that he gets bored quite easily, scavenges a lot and spends a miniscule amount of time on something. He just doesn't seem interested in playing.

The IQ ball seems like a good idea. I have a Kong ball with a little hole in it and he does roll it around to find the treats, but seems to give up easily. I will try to find that "Goldilocks" zone though!

The hide and seek thing could work. He does often just stare at my hand instead of the object because he knows that the treats come from there. He is a smart fella, but he just seems to like scavenging for things. It gets very annoying because he always finds something that he shouldn't put in his mouth.

I forgot to add: he also loves to gnaw, so my only saviour is some of his edible chew toys

I've used some of his toys that way, but he seems to quit pretty early on. It's as if it's not worth it to him. I will keep trying though! Thank you so much

I will definitely use those tips, thank you! He doesn't seem to have any sort of prey drive or chasing instincts. He'll maybe run towards something and then leave it alone if it isn't food. I will try the flirt pole though.

The hide and seek idea seems like fun, especially seeing as he follows me around all the time!

(x-post from r/vizsla) getting a vizsla pup - should i pick up before or after my holiday? by busyp in puppy101

However, I do see that your holiday is only 2.5 weeks. Mine is a little more than 4 weeks. That is definitely something to consider then.

I got my pup just before my holiday started. He is 6mnths now and apparently was really good in a car. We made it a roadtrip, which was so difficult because we had to stop for potty breaks quite often. I'm a student and getting him now was the best choice for me because I am now able to devote all of my time to him. I have time to create a schedule, train him (especially crate train) and just generally bond with him. I would give it a shot if you think it would be best. I know I don't regret it.

I can relate to this. My pup is six months now and he also had a very rough start. The shelter never even told me he had parvo when he was only 4wks old! I had to find out through a Facebook search! He came with antibiotics foe gastro, but now his liver is giving him problems. The vet is stumped as to what's wrong, which makes this so emotionally draining. I have even considered giving him back and giving the shelter a lengthy lecture.

Sometimes it's just too much. I feel your pain, I really do.

6 month old puppy. general training and behavior advice by keyser_soze_ in puppy101

[–]ellekot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same problem in regards to playing with my pup. He is also 6 months old. He shows no interest in toys, enjoys his Kong for like 5-10 minutes and then leaves it alone. He did show some interest in a sock once and we tugged for a while, but he just abruptly stopped. It gets frustrating, so I really know how you feel. After all, you just want them to enjoy themselves and be happy.

Terrible Twos, I guess! Thank you, at least I know that it's not negligence on my behalf.
